New X5 Owner

Hey guys, this is my first X5 but not my first BMW. I had previously owned a 335i and upgraded that to a 2008 M5 this summer. Well its in storage now for the winter months so I picked up a 2005 X5 4.8is for my "winter" vehicle

I have a few questions about it though. First of all the manual is missing so I will be picking up one of them from bavauto or ebay. Here is where I can use some help...

The previous owner had (maybe) installed some kind of iPod integration. I say that because there is an iPod cable sticking out down on the drivers side floor board area. There is also a Sirius satellite round antenna in the drivers side dash by the front window.

First off, I can't figure out if the iPod integration is still working. My x5 does not have navigation. I have tried switching to CD changer thinking that maybe he uninstalled that option for the iPod adapter. It just says "no magazine" or something like that. The normal CD slot works and the radio seems to work as well AM/FM.

Second off, what's with the Sirius antenna?

If anyone has any ideas on how I can find out if this still works please let me know. I was looking into adding the DICE unit to also add bluetooth, but who knows maybe I already have that?

I did look in the rear panel area and saw the CD changer and the Bluetooth module (whatever its called) but there is nothing else back there that I saw.

Lastly, the park distance control on the vehicle seems to be malfunctioning. The lights flash on the button but there is no beeping (I know how it's supposed to work as the one on my M5 works). Also the folding mirrors seem to not be working...the passenger side folds but retracts instantly while the drivers side stays stationary.

I was thinking of having these few items looked at by my local BMW indy shop, but if they are really pricey to fix I might just let them be as is.

Thanks everyone!

Welcome. Pics or it didn't happen. The mirror fix is easy. Search "folding mirrors fix" here. Could be a simple fix. PDC same thing. Push the button to turn on PDC, go around car and put your hand and ear by each sensor. If you hear it click, it works. If it does not click, it's either busted, or as in my case, the wires were chafed. Free fix.

Bluetooth, you need to remove the blue tooth module, and read the pin off of it. Then you can pair your phone.

The I pod wire, try the AUX setting in the stereo.

Thanks for the reply! I will take some pictures tomorrow. In the mean time, I already removed the bluetooth model and unfortunately their is no PIN. Mine is built pre 2005 so I think i read that I am SOL for built in Bluetooth.

I am intrigued however by the aux function on the radio. I messed with it quite a bit the other night and couldn't find aux. I found AM/FM/CD/CD Changer and that was it. Time to read the downloaded manual I guess.

What do you think is up with the Sirius satellite antenna?

Lucky for me when I removed the bluetooth module last night I took a picture of the label. It did in fact have my "pin" I was just looking for it to say "pin" and not PK: So, I got my bluetooth hooked up to my phone which is a very nice win.

Now if I could just figure out the Ipod thing.

Lol, this just keeps getting better and better. Now i found a custom installed red toggle switch under the drivers side dash. No idea what that is. I guess I will take it to the dealer and have them look around a bit.

Maybe the toggle switch is related to the iPod adapter. Could it be that the switch toggles the stereo input between iPod and CD changer?

Could be the hidden radar detector. My previous BMW Touring had the hidden radar detector controls located underneath the driver side dash.

dealer will be clueless at your expense - anything that is not BMW accessory is unchartered territory for them...
first, check your as built sheet at bmwvin.com.

also, connect your ipod and toggle that switch, see what happens...

Just an FYI for any reading this and are curious about bluetooth availability on the X5 (and other BMW models)...as well as how to pair your bluetooth phone with your vehicle:

TIP: KL R = ignition position 1 | KL 15 = ignition position 2
