Backup Camera

Hey everyone,
I know there have been threads on this before but I haven't been able to find a clear answer. If I want to run a RCA or another type if rear view camera to my factory 2006 NAVI headunit, can I? Thank you in advance!!!

A little off topic, but which back up camera are you looking to install? I want to do the same when I upgrade my head unit to an Eonon.

1) Car Reverse Rear View Backup Camera for BMW 3 5 Series x5 X6 | eBay Not sure how the much light will be emitted from this one, I love my led license plate lights.

2) 1999 13 BMW x5 E53 E70 CMOS NTSC Car Rear View Backup Reverse Waterproof Camera | eBay Not where to install this one.

Good luck with Eonon. poor quality head units. You will always get what you pay for.

the factory headunit (aka, the bordmonitor 16:9) will not take the regular RCA video leads (analog 1 volt peak-to-peak video signal). In order to implement the rear camera to the OE monitor, you need either a factory TV module (there is a dozen of part numbers, some are older, some are newer, some tuners are analogue only, some are hybrid, analogue and digital - and you still will not be able to pull any TV stations in the US, as we are using a different digital standard) or a special factory part that is designed exclusevely for the rear camera without the TV tuner... the second part is super rare, i only heard about it existence but it has not been in dealers' invetories for last 10-15 years and it has not shown up on the breakers' inventories (the ones in Baltic states as well as some other ones in germany). So, that leaves you with a TV tuner... with a TV tuner yuo gain a dedicated rear camera input along with a trigger circuit and also you get a separate A/V input and output (audio is only in mono on the TV tuners). The tuner will not put a picture on main monitor while the car is in motion but it will put a signal on the AV output (for rear seat monitors, if so equipped) while in motion. To allow the picture while in motion, you need either "hack" into the firmware by changing the TV module's programming, or introduce an iBus microcontroller that you plug into the TV harness. The microcontroller can give you some additional features, like channel chaning from the steering wheel (not part of factory design) or keep the CD or Radio playing while turning on the muted video picture. Can be handy in some situations...

With this setup you only wire the camera from the top lid of your trunk to the base of the trunk, to the battery compartment, and the rest of the signal is transimetted to the front by existing wiring...

I have a write-up in PDF for the camera istall with a factory TV module.

If you are going with an aftermarket headunit, then it is just the industry standard wiring to the headunit, as you are abandoning the factory wiring in favor of the aftermarket system. my write may help you with the camera install in the hatch if you are using the ebay "plug-n-play" camera for the rear license plate light - that camera is far cry from plug and play!!! it simply does not fit and there were folks that cut into the circuit board for the rear handle in order to fit that camera... it still does not fit flush, and the dimensions are off by 1mm - in one area it is too "tall" and in the next dimension it is too "narrow"...

In any case - do you homework first...

good luck

If you could send me that write up I'd really appreciate it! I have a 2005 X5 which I intend on getting a back up cam. I'm going to look on ebay for a tv turner as we speak.

send me your email address, i will send you the file... the write up is based on the $25 "plug-n-play" ebay camera that goes to license plate opening... that camera does not actually fit but in the write up you will see that you can modify the camera and then it fits...

has anyone had any experience with this camera from J & T distributing (same company selling Dyanavin stereo/nav units) Not sure if this is the same camera you're talking about Term X

J&T Distributing - BMW backup camera for E46, E39, E53

what is the LUX value and is it NTSC or PAL?
(Not sure what the Dyanavin N6 requires either to be honest)
what is the angle of view?
what temps does it work in?

I have not received a response from Jeff for almost a week now so I'd like to ask this community for any input.

Clock, check your PM...

This camera looks like all the other ones on eBay, so you need to do research. The lesser the lux number, more sensitive the camera. For decent reverse angle, you need 170 degree angle... pal or ntsc, in original setup with factory monitor and tv module it doesn't matter. I am 99% confident that dynavin can take either.
What is the trigger for reverse on dynavin?
