Interior light , Motion senor sqeaking and creaking

Hi,

The motion sensor and light housing is making all types of noises while I'm driving. I am noticing that it sags and seem a little loose, when I press and hold the housing to the roof it stops. Does anyone know how to disassemble this housing ? Maybe something must have come detached inside. I can't imagine if I had the entertainment center option that only the roof liner would be supporting its weight.

Also I went to change out my cabin filter the outer day and noticed it was missing the "twist" locking tab on one side, Is here any place I can buy a replacement ? Any one know the part number ?

Thanks,

Please help us to help you better...create a signature that includes your model/model year/build date...and any other important info like manual transmission etc...especially if you have a 3.0 or 3.0d.

We may need to look up diagrams or other information to share with you in answering your question...but we have NOTHING to go on or work with.

Click the USER CP link at the top right of the page, then go to EDIT SIGNATURE to create a signature...or type the info that's needed to answer your questions when posting to the forum.

For example, the IMS (interior motion sensor) is not located in the same place nor is accessed the same way from 2000-2006. If you have the Panoramic sunroof, the IMS is located closer to the rear view mirror and sunroof access panel.

the motion sensor and the light housing are one unit on the cars with pano roof, which are facelifted models.. they are separate units on the regular sunroof, which can be any model in the year range...

assuming from the absense of information that you provided, you have a pano roof and therefore a single sensor/light unit...

there are 4 (or 6) torx screws that are holding the assembly to the ceiling... you take an old credit card and pry the little cover from the sensor, it is held in by the plastic tabs... under that cover you will find two of the torx screws..

using your fingers, pry the interior light assembly from the overhead console - the reading lights and the main light are "separated" from the sunroof switch/microphone/SOS switch, and you can press your fingers in that area and pull the light section at an agle away from you towards the glass... once the light assembly is off, the microphone section will come off as well... there are remaining 2 (or 4, i just don't remember) torx screws...

and like the QS said - have a signature line to help us to help you...

Thanks Guys,

I have my vehicle information in "What I drive/drove" section but it doesn't show up in my signature. Any how 2003, I'm assuming it's non face lift . e53 4.4 Automatic, regular sunroof (non-pano) 98K miles

The housing also contains the remote tilt for my back seats. It is located behind the opening to the sunroof.

QS nailed the motion sensor for you - disregard my post about the sensor, as it does not apply... i never removed the sensor in the original E53 (i had 2002 model too), but i can speculate that it is held to the ceiling by the same torx screws... pry around, you will be able to get in and tighten it up...

The style cover you have just clips to the frame work that is attached to the ceiling.

The problem may be a broken clip (its just plastic)...if you remove the cover...take a good luck at its underside to see how it "fits" to the parts that it attaches to (#21 & #22). Look for any cracks or broken pieces which may be the reason its not fitting properly.

Is this what your cover looks like (below)? I have no actual frame of reference for the pre facelift cover (I have the Pano sunroof)...but I am familiar with the IMS cover in the e38 & e39 which is similarly attached to the center of the ceiling (just behind the sunroof)...but doesn't have the light built into it like the e53.
