2001 4.4i X5 Replacing chain guides and not the chain
The reason i want to do the chain guides is a terrible engine noise. Broken chain guides are the suspects. |

No, you can not remove the guides without removing the chain, thus taking the gears off the cams.
But, you don't need to buy the tool. Just rent it! Bimmer Tool Rental :: Rentals Depending on miles, it includes the vanos rebuild tool if you want to do new vanos seals. I would, considering how far in you will be. Also plan on a lot of incidentals as I'm sure you'll find other things during the process. I would read over my previous post on the subject.
