2001 4.4i X5 Replacing chain guides and not the chain

Hello Guys, my question is: Can you theoretically replace chain guides and/or tensioners without taking off the chains. I know what most of you going to say. Why do a half job. The answer to that is that I don't want to spend $900 on camshaft locking tool that i will never use in my life. I am sure the chain is prob a bit loose then it started out but I am willing to take a chance and say Ahh, it'll be fine.
The reason i want to do the chain guides is a terrible engine noise. Broken chain guides are the suspects.

No, you can not remove the guides without removing the chain, thus taking the gears off the cams.

But, you don't need to buy the tool. Just rent it!

Depending on miles, it includes the vanos rebuild tool if you want to do new vanos seals. I would, considering how far in you will be. Also plan on a lot of incidentals as I'm sure you'll find other things during the process.

I would read over my previous post on the subject.
