X5 4.8is Navigation display without MK4

Does any know if the navigation display will display the menu and radio stations without hooking up the MK4. I have been putting off making the MK4 purchase in hoping that Dynavin would come out with a system that is DSP compatible without having to switch speakers or amps.

Thanks
Ted

It will if you have an OEM video module installed in your vehicle. Otherwise it will not.

Really? I didn't think that was doable. I know that N6 has its own DSP for better sound but I will have to see it to believe they could figure out the amp handshaking protocol. Do you know someone who installed one and kept the DSP amp in there without the workaround solution?

As I said, email him. There is also a huge thread on N6 on bimmerforums as well for reference.

If you have non nav but have DSP it will work out of the box no issues or workarounds, you retain factory DSP amp.

If you have DSP and factory nav I believe all you need is the Fakra cable they sell.

Yeah, I know Jeff since we started almost in the same time the Dynavin Hualingan competition. My X5 had DSP and when I worked with Hualingan back then there was no way the DSP protocol could be reverse engineered. I looked into other options here in NA but nobody could fake that handshake to keep the amp 'alive'. I ended up making a workaround that was also adopted by Dynavin users and Jeff as a solution.

Here is the original thread: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...9-e53-diy.html

The Fakra cable is for NAV only. The Dynavin or any HU would have to connect the audio output to where the amp input wires are which is in the trunk... and the radio antenna.

In a few words I doubt they will ever make a DSP compatible HU.

nuts. you guys are teasing me. I do not have NAV, but I DO have the DSP system but would love and would love to put a 100% functional NAV system in the X5 without having to buy the entire BMW system and install it allllll (which is possible, just not easy/fun/cheap).
I'll be creeping this thread. (slips back into the dark corner)

Motorsport, I was hoping to do the same thing, but my research showed that if you did not install the MkIII or IV then the HU display will not work.
now UCrewX5 says there is a poor mans way to do it (sans Navi) and I'd be ok with that as I really just want the screen to hook up a reverse camera to.

Mike, I think you are a bit confused or I misunderstand what you want.
The link I posted above addresses exactly what you want although you have a different connector in the back for the iBus than I had when I did mine.

So, because you have DSP you need to keep all the components in connected and just relocate them.

As far as the unit, I would suggest Avant 2 as it has all the latest technology in it. Dynavin I believe it's left behind.
https://avinusa.com/bmw-5-series-e39...on-system.html

I can help you install it. All you need is the HU which can be Avant2, Dynavin or whatever you decide...

Fmugur, I was hoping to stick to a factory look.
I do not want to get rid of my DSP components so I'm screwed as no aftermarket head unit could mate with the DSP system (until not apparently)
I COULD do a complete install for a factory nav system but really didn't wanna get that involved.
What did u end up doing?

Fmugur, idk but the N6 is advertised as plug and play with DSP now with no workaround, yes I remember the old workaround well and thank you for that.

A member on another thread has DSP and ordered an N6 last night (four8.is) so just waiting on his install and impressions. But it looks like finally it's been done.
