iPod install with FM modulator

Contributed by: P White

Written by P. White
My baby. A 2002 X5 3.0. SP, PP, CWP, RCC, Xenon, Lumbar.

Here's the FM Modulator unit. It installs in the dashboard.

Plugs from l to r: Controller, AI Net to tuner, Aux for iPod, Power, Antenna.

CD unit. This is the head unit, with radio tuning functions as well.

Back of CD. Note antenna plug on left. A FAKRA SMB plug. I think this is new.

A Safety Mount bracket for V60 handsfree install to come later.

How the Safety Mount bracket attaches.

Climate Control just pops out once MFD and CD are removed.

Wiretap time. Red/Yellow - Battery. Brown/Black - Ground. Purple/Red - Ignition.

Routing controller cable through hole behind ashtray.

Cable routing behind dash. Note mod on right for iPod cable.

The black plug was taped to harness but fits in CD/radio plug. I clicked it in.

I believe the black plug wires are for speakers for cell phone hands free kit.

Antenna Adapter by Metra. 44-EU30. Found it at installer.com. Nice guy in Hous.

Here is the adapter plugged into the factory FAKRA SMB Antenna connector.

Note the connector on head unit is a very tight fit. Needs to be rt. angle plug.

Here's the little hollow I made to route the iPod cable.

Routing of cable for iPod. It goes beside the CD player and under the wood trim.

Putting dash together. FM modulator fits behind MFD and below CD.

It's snug, but it fits.

Extra cabling is bundled up behind the climate control.

Panavise bracket with Gripmatic holder and cable routing.

BMW Non-smoker Ashtray replacement with hole drilled for cable.

Controller installed in Ashtray replacement.

Route cable back to tuner through center console.

Remove back seat and console trim. Running cable here is a major PITA.

Cable goes up left side by back seat. Used a hanger to follow wiring harness.

Here is the XM tuner unit. I used heavy duty velcro to attach to CD Changer.

Wire Taps again. Red/Yellow - Battery. Brown/Black - Ground.

View of Panvise bracket and Gripmatic holster for iPod.

Reverse view of same.

Here it is with iPod.

Dash reassembled.

My Waterfield Designs iPod case. I got a iPod car charger to recharge the iPod.

Here's the Alpine controller. Ashtray door won't close. I'm working on it.
