Quite a few threads on this topic.

I used Valvoline MaxLife for my N62 ZF6HP in the summer/fall. Three times. A lot less expensive than the BMW/ZF fluid and it's supposed to meet the spec for mine:

Some will say that it's not certified by BMW or ZF. For me the cost savings were worth the risk, particularly since I don't drive my X5 that much. It got rid of some harsh shifting, probably due to low fluid. I had a leak at the mechatronic sleeve (replaced, along with the filter).

Highly recommend a Foxwell or other diag tool to monitor the ATF temperature.
