Is this a normal diesel idle? Or bottom end knock - VIDEO
Hi guys
I'll preface this by saying I'm new to diesel ownership and I've put only 100km on my car in the 3 days I've owned it. I know diesels can clackety clack and carry on, so I'm not sure if this noise is normal or not - but it doesn't feel right. I guess normally I'm in the car with the doors shut so I haven't really noticed this noise before, but I'm somewhat alarmed. This sounds to me like a bottom end knock. The car has 115km on it and what I assumed to be reasonably sound dealer service history. I've taken a video so hopefully someone can help. Diagnosis so far: Have run BMW Scan 1.4.0 - no error codes. Car is at operating temperature. Oil levels ok. Sounds quiet at start up but then at about the 20 second mark the knock starts to amplify. Noise is louder under the car and with the oil cap off, I can't really link the noise to tappets. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b2...pszxlgfvjz.mp4 Any help would be hugely appreciated. It's a public holiday here tomorrow and I'll be stressing until I can get it in to my mechanic! |
Update, jacked the car up and it's coming from the bellhousing. Sounds like something is loose in there, flywheel, torque plate.....dunno. Can see score marks on the transmission to engine mounting bolts so obviously trans has come off at some stage.....
Any suggestions? |
Took a video of where the offending noise is coming from...

Going to link to the other thread,
but an update for Aussies, car is going down to see John at BM Autowerks tomorrow..... A scan has shown up a faulty flow plug on #3 which probably explains the rough/smokey start that has come on over the last few days. But not sure the noise is related. |

They're good with the performance bmw sedans but i don't think they're good with x5's or maybe with just E53. |
Where do you suggest, Tymatk?

..:: Gambold Engineering Services ::.. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Euro Works Mechanical Services - Melbourne Australia Never had any issues with both company. Having said that, i hear a lot of good feedback from Autowerk but i personally had a bad experience .......! |
Interesting, thanks - that's the second time in a week that Euroworks has been mentioned. They are literally around the corner from my work so I may go have a chat to them at some stage. So far BMAutowerks have been pretty helpful, still awaiting a final diagnosis, but they've been really communicative so far.

Yeah, mine definitely doesn't make the noise mate. Somethings knocking, and it sounds like it's directly related to crankshaft revolution to me.
Definitely sounds to me like it's coming from the drive plate area. Do you know if the tranny has ever been out of it? |
Yep, if doesn't sound right. I mentioned in the second post, transmission bolts have score marks which makes it pretty clear to me that the trans has been off at some stage. Bm autowerks have run diagnosis and picked up glow plug faults, EGR fault and injector fault. So they're pulling the manifold on Monday and concentrating on those areas first. Will keep you all posted. Appreciate the reply, Ant
