Adding bluetooth to a 2005 4.4
 

Okay everyone I need some clarification. I have a 2005 4.4 that i took delivery off in Nov 2004. I do not have the premium package, or BMW assist. I want to add bluetooth to my X5. I need to know if it is already prewired and I just need to buy the ULF. The dealer said that most likely my X5 is not pre-wired, but from first hand experience know that the dealer is not always right I rather get a second opinon. Any way for me to verify, maybe visually?

Like you, I'm guessing that it is wired and ready for the installation of the Bluetooth module. Kewl X5 had a similar experience with his M3 and was able to retrofit Bluetooth into his vehicle.

I suspect you can go one of two routes here.

option 1 - You can install the newer Motorola combo Assist/Bluetooth module to get the Bluetooth capability in the vehicle. The advantage of going this route is, if you plan to use the V710 from Motorola, it is compatible with that phone. The disadvantages of going this route is the module is more expensive then the Visteon module and you would have to add the stand-alone Voice Recognition module if you want that capability (adding additional cost to the installation)

Option 2 - You can install the Visteon Bluetooth module. The advantage of going this route is the ULF module is cheaper than the Motorola module and it has the built-in Voice Recogniton functionality. The disadvantages are that it has compatibility problems with the Motorola V710 phone (only an issue if you area Verizon subscriber) and it doesn't offer Assist capability (note: I'm not sure if you can get the Assist to work under option 1 either :dunno: )

Thanks U Crew it did help. I dont need BMW Assist so I think Option 2 will be my choice. What I am more concerned about is assuming that the wiring is there, buying the ULF and realizing that the X5 isnt wired for bluetooth and have to run wire through the headliner.

Like I indicated above, like you, Kewl X5 ordered his 2004 M3 without Assist and without Bluetooth. He recently did the BT retrofit and all of the necessary wiring was there.

If you are concerned, be sure to check that all the wiring is there before you make any purchases.
