what do I need to BT it to my 2004 X5?

What's the build date on your 2004? If it's pre 03/04 then you can only go the Visteon route and you will lose Assist. If it's post 03/04 then you can swap the Motorola Assist module with a 2005 or newer Assist/BT module and have both Assist and BT.
