Bluetooth?
 

Hi all,

Sorry for the noob question but this is my first post. I have a 2004 X5 and was I'm pretty sure I don't have bluetooth. But recently while going through my documents I found a bluetooth pass key card. Also my steering wheel has all the telephone buttons. I'm just wondering, why would they give me a bluetooth pass key card if I didn't even have it? Is it possible that I do have it and I just don't know?

Unfortunately you do not have bluetooth. Your car is equipped with the wiring however. So you can easily retrofit it.

Wishful thinking, but no you don't have it. My '04 came w/the same passkey card, etc. It was worthless. I ended up buying a kit that had bluetooth and the voice recog. module and saved a bundle installing it myself. It's an easy DIY since the car is all prewired, especially if you already have BMW Assist and an overhead microphone.

I already have BMW assist and the microphone. Would you mind telling me where you got the kit? I'm assuming I wouldn't need to install the cradle and all that other stuff I see on sites like bmwbluetooth. Would I just need to swap the assist module in the back with the bluetooth/assist combo model and I would be done?

Note that if your buld date is before 03/04 then you will likely need to use the Visteon module (with no Assist) instead of the Motorola module (which lets you keep Assist).

I bought it from EIS and they were great. You will to swap out the Assist module and replace it w/the bluetooth one (less expensive) or the assist/bluetooth combo unit (more expensive) from the dealer off an '05+ model. You just need to decide if you want to keep the Assist feature or not. You can reuse the existing antenna and microphone so there is no wiring necessary excpet for finding the correct cables and plugging everything in. No vehicle recoding was needed. This forum has some great write ups on doing the install, and the kit comes with complete instructions. It took me about 90 mins. to do. You don't need the cradles, etc. unless you want to recharge the phone in the armrest. However, if you use the cradle, I was told that the X has an external antenna that also helps boost your reception.
