New BT/Assist Part Number
 

Dealer installed new bt/assist today.
It's a part number I haven't seen here yet which is 84-10-9-122-529. It should be the latest but I've no way of knowing for sure. I was able to load my phonebook but because this is all new to me I have yet to learn or try the voice recognition feature. This part was less than $700 and I was able to bring home the old assist module from my 04 X5 in a box.

I also learned of the new back-up cam offered for the X5 from BMW today!

What do you mean?

Appaently here in the US the X5 did not come with back-up cams nor was it an option. My local dealership was aware of a euro part number but didn't have way of ordering it. They told me that when ordering a euro only part number that it shows back ordered and never ships. Just recently within the last month there was a bulletin released to the US BMW dealers about a back-up cam kit for the X5 and X3.

Interesting though that the BMW US camera kit is a different part number to the European camera kit. I wonder if they are different in looks or that. Have you any idea?
The European camera is quite big in a box and sits to the left of the registration plate.

Possibly because most UK cars have the TV tuner, whereas in the USA they dont. So BMW offer a "switch box" to allow non-TV tuner cars to be able to accept a composite video signal from the camera.

Wow parts for this back-up cam for US X5 is $1,052 and they my dealer gave me a 5 hour install time. I was able to get the install manual for this so I'll post it up here later when I get home. From looking at the install I can see why it cost so much (it seems like so many parts involved) but in the end it is still over $1,500 for a back-up cam. Why? I like factory options so I can minimize my aftermarket wiring but is this worth it?

I guess I named this thread wrong but to follow up on my bluetooth assist module; it does have voice recognition! I'm learning how to use it and it isn't nearly as user friendly as my Acura TL but I'm glad it is now a part of my X5.

One thing that was really odd was that when I went to call BMW Assist, the representative told me that my VIN is registered as an X3. They were unable to sign me up until they did some research and fixed this problem. I don't understand what happened?!

I would mention this to your BMW center. The BT/Assist TCUs are coded with the VIN number of your car. It sounds like they have entered the wrong VIN ... which is very odd ! Recoding will fix the problem.

As a test, when you pair your BT phone with your BMW, your phone should see the device called BMWabcde .... where abcde are the last 5 digits of your VIN number !
