Questions 2004 X5 wtih NAV and DSP
 

I've been reading the threads trying to confirm what I need to upgrade to bluetooth and what features I'll lose by the switch. My local BMW dealer is has been telling me that upgrading to bluetooth for the 2004s is nearly impossible and too costly. But the threads conflict with that info.

My Details:
2004 X5 with NAV and DSP - Production date 10/2003

It seems that the recommended solution is to use a BMW Bluetooth retrofit Kit. Such as one from bimmernav.com.

It seems to have the latest ULF:
84 10 6 980 130 10th Generation Bluetooth ULF from BMW

I guess I have 3 questions:
1) It seems that during the install I will be disabling BMW Assist module. Is this correct? Not a big deal to me just trying to confirm.
2) Will this upgrade support voice reg for bluetooth and Nav system?
3) Since the 2004 models have BMW assist and therefore a microphone is there any need to upgrade to the latest microphone model?

I did this w/my 04 and it works fine. You can also upgrade to a combination Bluetooth/Assist module as the 05's+ have if you want to keep assist. I went without assist as I had it for a year and didn't ever use it - thought I'd save myself the monthly fee too.

To answer your questions:
1) I believe the above answers this - which ever you choose. However, if you want both, you'll also need an additional antenna - one for assist, one for the phone cradle (if you go with a cradle).

Based on buying a new retrofit kit I shouldn't need any new coding by the dealer correct? The install instructions look easy enough.

I'm not sure about this one, but I think you are correct. I let the dealer do mine because they didn't charge me for labor.

Stupid question I know, but how does the BT voice work with Nav? I often make calls using voice reg - dial number etc. Can I somehow enter address or something for Nav?

If you already have Assist, then you do not need to have the dealer recode the computer. I did the install on my old '04 and did everything myself in about 2hrs. Just install the module where the Assist module was (w/voice recog. depending on which one you get), you can reuse your old Assist antenna and microphone, and install the tray in the center console. You can add a snap in adapter to charge your phone if you want, but you really don't need it. Pair your phone and that's it.

Your responses are true for a 2004 produced after April of 2004. His is a pre-April 2004 production, however, so his only option is to forego Assist and install the Visteon BT module. He cannot put in the Motorola combo Assist/BT module, it won't work.

bluetooth/assist DOES NOT have voice control of the navigation. The system is a male voice system with voice tags and voice dailing.

Bluetooth ULF module (Bluetooth retrofit kits such as 10 gen ULF) DO HAVE VOICE CONTROL of navigation. The system is a female voice system with voice contol of voice tags, voice dailing, notepad, and navigation voice control. The above voice control guide is for the ULF module

Yup. I did the same for my 2004. Installation took maybe 30 minutes if that. It's very simple but I read the instructions on bimmernav's website and on this forum too. Did not require a recoding by dealer. The voice recognition can be used on the Nav to manage some of the features (see pic for a summary of commands). I kept the original microphone which came with the BMW assist and it works OK. However, just recently decided to upgrade it since some people have told me they hear background noise when I'm in the X5.
