What Does This Module Do?
 

I recently bought a used 2004 X5 4.4i with DSP and NAV.

I noticed that there is an eject box in the armrest, and that the phone menu on the NAV (and the steering wheel button) actually dials numbers. (I get connected to a pre-recorded message asking me to call Bell for more info.)

I was thinking that since the eject box was there, I could use Bluetooth but there doesn’t seem to be any pairing buttons or computer options. I took a look at the module in the back, and it is showing an ESN but no Bluetooth passkey. I also didn’t see the Bluetooth antenna mounted. Voice commands also do not seem to work. I haven’t tried it but the BMW assist buttons are there. I'm guessing that I have no Bluetooth. :(

This module is part number 84.11 6947308-01 and I have attached a pic of the module, module connectors, and the eject box.

I just have a few questions:

• Can this module work as a stand-alone phone, or is it just for BMW assist?
• What phone model fits in this cradle, and what does this cradle do?
• Are there any adaptors or connectors that allow other phone models to be used with this cradle?
• If I wanted to add Bluetooth, can I just add an antenna to the existing module (it looks like the connectors are there), or do I need to buy a new module?

I’ve been reading through the forums and I am a bit confused about which features are applicable to my unit (Is this a CPT 9000?), and I didn't receive the phone manual with the car. Any comments are appreciated...

Because your X5 is a 2004 with Assist, there is no functional Bluetooth feature/section in that TCU module. However, BMW enabled the full OEM use and functionality of a CPT9000/Motorola V60 with that TCU module for that year.

That's the purpose of that CPT9000/V60 cradle, to plug that phone in there and be controlled by the TCU, display information in the Nav screen and use the steering wheel phone button. That's what I did with my 2004 M3 with Assist: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=192232

Your best option is to get an OEM ULF module and replace the Assist TCU. If you want to keep the Assist service a new TCU (MY2005+, the newer the better) will be required.

This is a Bluetooth upgrade module that fits into the CPT9000 cradle and allows a Bluetooth phone to work the same was as the CPT9000 phone would work, including steering wheel buttons, phone book, etc.

This looks like an easy way to get bluetooth. This is only $200 or so, instead of triple that for the new ULF module setup in the trunk.

I am still doing some research, but I will probably see if I can get one of these...

I thought that the BTUM was only for MOST 7 Series, but it seems that it also works in I-Bus vehicles... :confused:

The only drawback that I see with this module is that it does not include Voice Activation, but other than that it sure beat a CPT9000/V60 completely and an ULF in price. ;)
