US 2002 X5 (3.0) Bluetooth Questions

Hello,

I am considering adding Bluetooth to my 08/2002 build 3.0 X5. It currently does not have bluetooth or wired phone so it looks like I am starting from scratch. I do not have Nav.

After reading a bunch of posts and bimmernav.com I have some questions:

1.) What is the SES plug for? How do I know if I need it?

2.) I pulled the upper console out and saw the vent where the mic goes. The mic is not there. I could only find a 6pin wiring harness. Does this mean my X is not prewired?

3.) My steering wheel has a button that has a face with a sound coming from it. Should my X already be prewired?

Thanks, I am just trying to determine what parts I need.

Best,

- Brent

Yes, your X5 is pre-wired for phone. All US-spec BMWs are pre-wired for phone. The mic wiring will be in the console, and that steering wheel button is also evidence of prep.

Bimmernav could probably tell you for sure if your date of manufacture has the SES pre-wiring too. Certain model years came wired for the SES module (separate voice recognition module) in addition to phone. In cars with SES wiring, you need a special jumper that bypasses the SES plug, since the voice recognition features are built-in to the Bluetooth ULF.
