Another phone question

Hello all ,I have loved the X5 for years, and finally picked up a 2004 X5 4.4, and I absolutely love it!! I am trying to figure out the phone system. I have the sos which is not working, with a phone button next to it. I have the controls for it on the nav system, and the steering wheel, I get a 4 bar signal strength on the nav screen, but no phone adapter in the armrest. Do I have Blue Tooth? Can anybody help a newbie out here?
Thanks Millions in advance!!!

Hi and welcome
You possibly don't have...
1. Check at the LEFT side of the trunk, under the 6cd changer, for a silver box (the TCU or ULF)
2. Check at a Dealer with the VIN for options sold WITH the car...
3. Have a look here, at the forums - use the SEARCH feature - a lot of knowledge...

Thanks for responding. I was up half the night checking on here researching and running out to the vehicle. I do have the silver box under the cd changer. ( I viewed one of the previous posts w/ pics on here, and it seems like I have the set up). When I press the rt button on the steering wheel it says phonebook empty. I found the white paper that came with the owners manual that has the BT code on it too. When I press the phone button next to the sos button it automatically goes to the sos operator, saying that its not activated. After reading some articles through BMWUSA, Im under the impression that I have to subscribe to the BMW assist in order for this to work. Could this be my problem? They want $199.00 a year for this. I am going to try and check with the dealer. Thanks Again!

1. For BMW assist to work you do have to pay an annual subscription fee.
It should also be noted that I have a 2004 X5 as well and the assist system had to be upgraded last year. The dealer did this for year for free.

2. If your X5 is a mid year 2004 you probably have bluetooth and you just need a compatible bluetooth phone. The BMW web site has a list of compatible phones.

You should read the manuel on pairing your phone, you will need the bluetooth code you found with the manuel.

The BMW pairs in the first 3 mins after you turn the key on. You should have the phone menu to place where it looks for bluetooth devices and turn on the key.

To use the voice commands, that are triggered by the button on the steering wheel, hold down button and press help. It should be noted that the phone book that is part of this feature/function is separate from your phone and you will need to populate the BMW phone book to use it.

Well I just got back from the dealer. W/o running the vin#, or looking at the X5, they told me that I didnt have BT. Mainly because I dont have the phone adapter in the arm rest. I explained to them about the thread here, w/ pics, but it didnt seem to matter.So........Im :banghead: CONFUSED!!

Just take the phone and put it in discover mode, switch on the BMW, if the phone sees the BMW you have Bluetooth.

I tired messing with the phone that way also, with no luck. They told me that it might have it in there, but might not be hooked up, and that the silver box below the cd changer and the little black doo hicki (BT ant) on top are for the SOS BMW assist.
So, is there any way I can still hook it up?

Do you hear an audible beep when pressing the phone button for +5 seconds?

There would be no reason to disconnect a working system. I would recommend having your local dealer take a look for you.

Bluetooth is not $1500. Our Bluetooth kits support the following functions:

- Voice Activated Dialing
- Phonebook Synchronization
- SMS Text Message Display (depending on carrier)
- Name Recognition
- Voice Activated Navigation (vehicles equipped with NAV)
- Digital Notepad

And most importantly - does not void factory warranty, since we are using only Genuine BMW parts.

More information on the kits can be found on our website:

Let me know if you have any further questions.

bluetooth

I have an 06 X5....Motorola KRZR....
I had to go into the bluetooth menu on the phone and search for hands free.... Then it found the BMXxxxx

Then it will ask you for the Pass Key... It is located on the silver box under the DVD in the left rear quarter panel..

Works great!
Good luck.
