Looks like most of them are Sony Ericsson or Nokia..
I know in the states it depends on the carrier too, different providers have different Bluetooth protocol.

I know the RAZR & SLVR transfer SMS for cingular, but the same phones for sprint DO NOT support SMS.

Sprint doesn't support ANY SMS, battery tools.

apetrov1x5 12-15-2009 02:43 PM

just tested SE C905 - it works great!

Is the SMS transfer only for Europe? I've never seen it work in the USA. Can you or someone post some photos and explain?

SMS transfer is phone dependent, not region dependent. Some phones that correctly and fully support the BT profile can share SMS messages with the BMW Bluetooth system. It is very cool. You can read and delete SMS messages, but you can not send them from the car's screen.

Here is a post with an example SMS message in my car.
SMS is phone dependent, more than carrier dependent...

Unfortunately, I have not seen any recent phones that share SMS messages with the BMW Bluetooth system. So, this is kind of like an old, dead feature now.

X5 Meister 03-03-2010 04:47 PM

Interesting. Well doesn't work on mine. Motorola phone that otherwise works perfectly with the bluetooth setup (even transfers the phonebook perfectly) and usese Cingular / AT&T.

It's not just a phone issue, not all ULF's support the SMS-function.

I believe this is true, but I do not have an accurate reference of which ULF modules began supporting SMS. I know for certain that a 4th Generation ULF (part number 84.21-6 950 089) will support SMS. Also, every higher generation ULF I tested (5th, 7th, 11th, and 12th) will also support SMS.

X5 Meister 03-04-2010 02:46 PM

Interesting. I have a TCU. Not the newest one but it only a few generations off and it doesn't work with a phone and carrier that you mention in post # 8 that is known to work.

I dare to disagree...
I have tested myself a Sony Ericsson C905 - it works perfectly with sms transfer.

today/tomorrow I will test a Toshiba TG01 and it should work with both sms and emails on the bmw screen

both phones are quite recent I would say.

As was mentioned above by somebody, the Windows Mobile phones should work (if they don't, then Jetware software will probably add the missing BT profiles to the phone)

apetrov1x5 03-17-2010 11:51 AM

well the testing of Toshiba TG01 is a NO

without Jetware, the only think it did right was transfer of the phonebook
with Jetware, the only improvement was the sync of only a certain category from my phone book...but I will keep trying as this is my phone now and it have to work :)

can you please write a more detailed explanation how did you make it work?

I have a Toshiba TG01 with WM 6.5 and does not work (not only SMS feature, but even the call function is a mess)

I have installed the Jetware 1.4 (the free version) and it only work with the category sync feature (I only want to sync CAR category from my phonebook with the car)

What version of WM do you have?
what version of Jetware do you have?

your help is much appreciated

X5 Meister 03-17-2010 10:05 PM

Do you have your Nav system configured in some special way (i.e. the SMS settings) via the service mode?

I might be wrong, but from my experience, Idrive cars do not have sms feature anymore (probably for safety reasons)

try one of the phones listed in this topic as sms compatible or visit bmw website - they have a table in the BT section and you can see there if there is sms function for your phone or not

X5 Meister 03-18-2010 02:36 AM

I'm referring to non-idrive cars.

apetrov1x5 03-18-2010 04:16 AM

then I guess nothing has to be done apart the fact to use a sms compatible phone - see the list at the beginning of the thread

X5 Meister 03-18-2010 04:20 AM

Then what are the settings for on the service mode menu?

apetrov1x5 03-18-2010 04:47 AM

that is my point - I do not know of any changes in the settings (in fact I do not about the existence of them), but regardless , it should work with all default settings anyway if the phone has the right software.

that is the point of my thread - to identify the phones which support this feature...the bmw prior to idrive does support it by default

X5 Meister 03-18-2010 12:22 PM

And that is my point. There are 3 settings that can be set in the service mode menu that seem to be related to SMS. Would configuring them allow additional phones to have SMS functionality? They exist for a reason otherwise they would not be there. I want to know why.

I do not recall any special settings in the nav service menu that relate to SMS, but I will look again. Also, my Mom's car has a MKIV and a 7th generation ULF, and she gets all her SMS message. I did not change any of the nav settings related to phone or SMS for her car. I am pretty sure that anything SMS or phone related is at its default in both of our cars.

Which three settings are you seeing? I will look on my car to see what they are set at.

ok, Toshiba TG01 finally works!!!

I can read SMS on th escreen of my car now

jlboygenius 02-07-2012 11:01 AM

This morning I paired a new Verizon Droid Razr MAXX to my bluetooth and a new envelope icon appeared. Messages!

This is the 7th phone I've paired and the first one that has ever suppored the SMS messages feature. I had written it off as something that only certain old phones supported.

Since the Droid Razr is the same as the Droid Razr Maxx, i assume that the new droid razr will also work.

Here's a list of phones that do NOT work:
old razr v3, E815,Droid Eris, Razr2 - verizon
iPhone 3g - att
Droid EVO 4g - Sprint
