Nokia 8800 - Does it work?
Does anyone know if the Nokia 8800 work with the factory bluetooth kit. Nokia sends me off to BMW and BMW send me off to Nokia to find out if it works. I'm not about to buy one only to find out that it does not work.
I have a 05 X5 3.0 diesel Any help will be appreciated Thanks |
Good Question
Have had the same problem. BMW Aus Have given me a list of compatible phones, however there is only 4 I can choose from and only one Nokia which is the brand I prefer.
Maybe we could use this thread to start up a list of phones we know that are compatible to the factory Bluetooth kit? |

My friend has that phone next time I see him I will try and pair it If you do find out in the mean time let me know to save doing it
|
Bad news I am afraid guys I got it to pair but kept disconnecting and reconnecting however Could read SMS on Nav Screen until it disconnected and reading them seemed to make it worse, also the phone book did not transfer either So I would give it a this phone a miss!
|
Thanks mate for your efforts. Hopefully one day Nokia and BMW may get together and sort it out. Not sure what I want to do now. On another note "X5 Sport" did you have any extra long sms's or did any sms have exclamation marks in the message. This I have seen and makes the phone disconnect and reconnect and continue to do so.
Would really like to know if this may have been the case. Thanks again. Charlie Brown |
There was a lot of messages on the screen never seen it that full. I did not see any exclamation marks just * for un read messages will proberly see him on sunday night will try and get him to delete his SMS and try again. I did tey calling from the phone and did not connect with bluetooth that way either.
I did not really have that much time really but as it had been nearly two weeks since the first post wanted to try and get a answer if it worked for you. One other thing he said he has run out of memory on the phone so not that impressed with it just looks real nice and that is about it. I would have a look at the W800i which I have and that works perfect it just depends on what you want from a phone,I guess if you just use to make calls then the nokia will be good but if you lots of MP3's and videos get some thing else |
I've read else where that a guy with an M5 has this phone working prefectly with the Bluetooth.
Surely because it doesn't work on yours is not a conclusive test as you may not have the latest ULF ? There are many different ULF versions in cars and these all have different firmware therefore will surely have different support for different phones ? I am just retro fitting at the mo to use my 8800 with it and I've bought the very latest one so maybe that will have more luck ? I'll report back but like I said, a guy with an M5 in the UK ( I think he retro fitted ) hs this phone working perfectly. X5 Sport, do you know what number your ULF is ? Si |
I have no idea what the ULF number is but the car is only 8 months old
|
As per this article
http://www.xoutpost.com/showarticle-171.html my X5 has the 6th generation module. The latest ULF is suppose to be the 7th generation. It was easy to check the part number. Just 3 plastic hex nuts to undo. I'm still trying to find someone to test the phone out with. I appreciate everyones help with this one. thanks. Charlie Brown |
I have 8800, and it works perfectly with my '06 4.8is.

Perhaps this is the point, only the 7th Gen works with this newer phones ? Si |
OK,
I've just retro fitted a 7th Gen ULF in my E39 and I can't get the 8800 to stay connected when trying to dial or receive a call. SMS messages work perfectly and the phone book syncs but nothing esle. Hoon ( or anyone that can report this to work ) can you post your ULF part number or version and also your firmware version on the phone ( *#0000# ) Thanks |
Hey Biglad_uk.
Thanks for your help. What version of firmware do you have on the 8800? I've been given an 8800 by vodafone for my loyalty to date FOC. I will be trying it out this week. Just waiting for it to come in. I find that the S700i is a pain . Very unreliable on the 6th Generation ULF that I have in my X5. Lets see what the outcome is. Regards and thanks again Charlie Brown ( JACK ) |
Hi Jack,
My current firmware is V03.28 dated 26-05-05 but I'm hoping to get this updated today or tomorrow so will post back when it's done to let you know if the situation is changed Si |
Guys,
Here is my latest news. Well Vodafone sent me an 8800 this week. Very nice phone, except that it does not work with my X5. Well the version of this is 3.60 dated 12-08-05 RM-13 My ULF is the 6th Generation. I still don't think this is the latest version available. I will be checking with the Nokia Service Centre during the week. I read on the net the version is up to about 3.7x. Not sure if this is true or not. The phone uploads the phone book with no problem at all, however when I try to make or receive a call it disconnects and reconnects. Simon, Did you update your firmware yet? Let us know. Keep you all posted. Jack |

I have a 7th Gen ULF but I haven't had my firmware updated updated yet from 3.28. I'll try again this week to get it sorted and report back. I did find the guy who reported that the 8800 worked with his car but it turned out to be a 3 Series which uses a different ULF AFAIK. Si |
Simon,
Was that Hoon? From Hoon's post he does imply he has an 06 X5. And we still don't know what version of ULF or Firmware he has. Would be interesting to know. Thabks again. Jack |
No it was a guy from an M Power forum :-(
Interesting to know more info from Hoon then Si |
I had the same when I tried it
|
Well I spoke with Nokia Care Centre this morning and they tell me that the latest version number is 3.78
I'll be going in today to update it and will advise. Wish us luck! Jack |
Not good news. Phone has been updated to 3.78 and still the same. So now I can only wait for a further update to the firmware or check with BMW dealer if they have a vehicle with the 7th generation ULF and try it.
Then get them to change the ULF for me. Any more ideas guys! Jack |
The firmware version on my 8800 is 3.28 which is dated 26-05-05.
How do I confirm what kind of ULF that I have on my X5? |
Hoon,
Check the ULF itself. It is located in the rear left hand side panel. The model number will be on the ULF itself together with your passkey. This article tells you the generation of the ULF. I'm expecting it wll be the 7th generation. http://www.xoutpost.com/showarticle-171.html Let us know how you go. Thanks, Jack |
My ULF version is 84106963798-03.

Wow, That's not even on the list! I guess I have to speak to the guru at BMW and ask him what the story is with this ULF when I go in for my service next week. I'll keep you all posted. jack |
Now thats really wierd.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...84&fg=10&hl=12 What the hell is this then ? None of these part numbers match a know list of ULF and TBH the picture of the TCU looks different then a ULF. Any thoughts ? Hoon, any chance of a picture of your TCU ? Si |
Oops, Worked it out now.
This module that Hoon has appears to be a 4th Gen Motorola Combo Assist/Bluetooth Module given the numbering from the link in my previous post and http://www.xoutpost.com/showarticle-171.html So my question to my American friends is what is the difference between a ULF and a Motorola Combo Assist/Bluetooth Module ? Si |
Well today I spoke with one of the guys at BMW Sydney and he tells me that they have only ever been able to get the phone to pair and connect to the bluetooth. No phone book or sms can be read. This was done on a 3 series and he tells me that the 3 series and the x5 are the same module. I'm going in on Friday for a service and will be testing the phone with him on a newer ULF as well. I'll let you guys know the outcome.
Regards, Jack |
Well today I had the X5 serviced and had a very lenghty discussion with the service tech at the dealership. The information provided to me by the technician is that the ULF is Bluetooth 1.1 compatible and the 8800 is Bluetooth 1.2
BMW only support phones with Bluetooth 1.1 and that is it. Now I am not sure if Bluetooth 1.2 is backward compatible with 1.1 . The only way around this problem at the moment is to have a second phone in the car that has a cradle and has all calls diverted to it. I will also need a second SIM card. I would have to switch my 8800 off before entering the car. This is about all I can do until either BMW make the ULF 1.2 compatible or Nokia update the phone to make it 1.1 compatible as well. Make sense! Any more ideas are very welcome. Regards, Jack |
Well I'm all for throwing in the towel.
I have just been and had my Nokia 8800's firmware updated to 3.78 ( showing dated 17/10/05) and am disappointed to say that the disconnection problem is still there with my 7th Gen ULF :-( I've been out and bought a 6230i with firmware version 3.4 and this works perfectly and the really weird thing is that this phones software looks almost exactly the same as the Nokia 8800 !!!!! Perhaps Jack is right and perhaps this phone will never work with our cars due to this Bluetooth 1.1 / 1.2 issue but I'm now at a loss of what to do. I've spent £600 on retro fitting Bluetooth to my 01 540i Sport and now another £100 getting a compatible phone so I have to ask myself how much further I can go to get what I want :-( Jesus, Why can't Nokia and BMW just sort this out !!!!!! Rant over |
UPDATE,
I finally have the answer as to why the 8800 does not and will never work. Basically there are Bluetooth Profiles in the phone and the 8800 only has one handsfree profile where as say the 6230i has two. Without this extra Bluetooth profile ( the one used by BMW ) then it's never going to work in a month of Sundays. The info Charlie Brown got about 1.1 & 1.2 bluetooth versions is rubbish. This phone will never work. :-( |
Well I hate to tell you this but if you read my post near the start of this thread I said it did not work and bearing in mind I have had a lot of sucsess with getting lots of various makes and models working with the BMW bluetooth. I think you need to know who to trust when you get info of the net. I have been a member of this forum for some time and post pretty regular,Where this guy who said he had the 8800 working with his M5 could have been a 15 year old boy who thought the M5 was a cool car and the 8800 was a great phone so they are going to work.
I am sorry that this has cost you money, but at least you have a phone that works now. |
Can you guys tell me where to locate the ULF coding. You indicate left hand side panel? Is that on the passenger side down near the footwell?
I have tried a couple of phones with no luck (05 3.0l Diesel)I actually found one of my very old bluetooth phones 6310 in the draw and tried it, believe it or not it worked perfectly. I have a 6230 on order so I am praying that it will work. The main issue seems to be BMW have not built in alot of flexibility towards their system being compatible with a wide range of phones, rather restricting it for what I would think was to originally have an exclusivity agreement with a phone manufacturer but this did not happen. My dealer indicates they are currently trying to work with Nokia to get more compatibility out of their system. |
How reliable is your dealers info Jaybee? Even if I could get the 8800 to just recieve and make calls would be great. It's a great looking phone all except for the battery life. I can live with that for now.
I cannot understand why is it taking so long for BMW to fix these bluetooth issues that we and many other have. And the snap in adaptors are limited to older phones like the T39M. What an antique that one is. I'm using the T39M I found in my draw. Battery is shot and I'm not about to buy a new battery for it. It just works and I cannot see my phone book in the NAV display. I would rather one of the newer phones with a snap in adaptor if we can never get the 8800 going. I'm lost at the moment and probably frustrated with the incompatability the 8800 has with my BMW. Over to you guys for your comments. Jack |

That list is BS. The Moto MPx 220 isn't on there and it works fine with Bluetooth. |

Jack I suppose it's like anything a dealer tells you, you always have to take it with a grain of salt. I think as technology increases things will improve. As indicated I think the issue is BMW built such a restrictive system to start with, hoping they could benefit finacially out of it worldwide. I suppose to the same sort of agreement with ipod? Anyway I would suggest from an Aussie perspective write a letter to BMW highlighting how far behind there system is with other manufacturers, and if they get enough complaints they may push some action further. I think that all it will really require is a major software upgrade. With the new X5 on the way, whether they decide to rectify existing bluetooth systems or just have a better product for the new model onwards will be the question. JB |
Firmware update 3.94
Hi guys,
I have noticed that a new firmware is available (3.94) for the 8800. I'm probably barking up the wrong tree as usual, but you never know. If anything the battery life is suppose to be increased. So this could be a good thing in itself. I'm going to try and get it updated this week and will post a note about the changes I notice. Regards, Jack |
Firmware update 3.94
As expected the firmware did not do much other than increase the loudspeaker volume and as yet to find out the battery life. I will be testing over the next few days cocerning battery life.
Too bad. The 8800 is a nice phone. regards, Jack |
