How to Diagnose BT compatability problem

okay my i Mate Jam doesn't work properly with the BT system in my X5. :mad:

I can make calls fine, but don't seem to be able to answer calls (it hangs up when I hit the phone button on the dash or steering wheel), and doesn't transfer the phonebook.

Ive had a look here :
http://www.xoutpost.com/html.php?file=bmw_bt_phones.htm

and also on the other sites that are mentioned at the bottom of the page, and of course no-one lists the iMate (Ithink its called an o2 XDA mini in the UK?) as being compatable.

At the bottom of the page I mentioned above it indicates that for the phone to be compatable it needs:

(a) Bluetooth + (b) Handsfree profile => ability to make/receive calls

(c) Object Exchange => transfer of phone book from phone to car

Checking the specs on my phone, it has/does all this,... so why doesn't it work?

Is it different versions of Bluetooth? how can i figure what is missing, so I can fix it?

The bottom line is that the Bluetooth specification is still evolving and some manufacturers have interpreted the specs differently from others. Hence, not all Bluetooth phones are compatible with the BMW Bluetooth system.

The only possible fix is to see if there is some sort firmware update available for your particular BT phone that may address incompatibilty issues.

There is another possibility that I have discovered just this evening.

My Sony Ericsson P910i has been not working at all in my 2005 X5 4.8, yet works perfectly in my 2004 X5 3.0.

Now that I know it is something to do with the car, I just have to figure out what is different between the two to create a possible configuration that works in the 2005 models......

So for starters, before I go on down to the dealer, can anyone advise how I might check the TCU details and software versions?
