3G iPhone Snap in Adapter Mod
1 Attachment(s)
Modded 3G snap in adapter to fit old style console eject box. Note console eject box still needs to be changed the same as before for the 1G phone/snap in adapter combo. Pic is from a friends e38. This adapter works a lot better than the 1G adapter in the way that is pops the phone up for removal. And yes the phone charges when in the adapter.

I have not done one yet for an e53. Just e38 and e46. But console eject box is the same for the e46, e38, e39, e53 and e84/85. So the mod is the same for all of those models. Machine down the side rails of the console eject box by about 1/16th each side, then machine down the sides of the 3G snap in adapter to fit into the console eject box tray.
Craig |
According to a previous post (which you can probably find by searching on "iphone") by ECS Tuning, BMW is not bringing out an iPhone 3G compatible adapter for the E53. That doesn't mean that someone cannot make one by machining down the sides as stated above.

Craig - any chance you can make a write-up like that excellent one you made in the past that is now legendary on the net?
As far as parts go are these correct for an E53: - System Base Plate (eject box with charging facility) 84-21-6-946-063 $94.15 - Apple iPhone snap in adapter 84-10-9-182-792 $116.95 - Bumper Antenna 84-11-1-470-326 $63.75 Quote:

Will try and do up a 'how to guide' with the next mod. Part numbers -
3G Adapter 84 21 2 151 038 Console eject box 84 21 6 933 415 Bumper antenna 84 51 0 016 669 IIRC, not sure would check this one. Craig |
These are interesting part numbers and I'm a bit confused.
- The 3G adapter 84-21-2-151-038 I assume is the latest iPhone 3G adapter, and I suppose the 84-10-9-182-792 is the older regular iPhone adapter, is that right? Do you by any chance have a list of all the iPhone adapters that could be made to fit the E53? - Do you know if the iPhone 3G adapter 84-21-2-151-043 will work in the E53? - Your console eject box 84-21-6-933-415 comes up as a Euro spec only part for after 1/2003 (prior to that it was 84-21-6-924-067). Any reason why you specify that one and not the one specified for the USA which is 84-21-6-946-063 ? - The bumper antenna you specified 84-51-0-016-669 which I understand is the entire retrofit kit and retails for $213.95. A number of people have indicated that for the USA all that is needed is the one I mentioned that is 84-11-1-470-326 which retails for $63.75. What do you think? Here are the BMW parts on the BMW USA website. I'm curious as to your thoughts about the differences. BMW Accessories - 2006 X5 4.4i SAV:Phone Snap-In Adapters Quote:

Console Eject Box Numbers for BT retro fit in e46, e38, e39, e53, e83, e85, e86
- 84 10 9 168 940 Current part number - 84 21 6 933 415 Most common one that I have seen in all of the mods that I have done (>100) probably due to where people are getting there kits - 84 21 6 924 067 Have seen a couple - 84 10 9 157 586 - 84 21 6 933 416 - 84 21 6 924 068 - 84 21 6 946 063 - 84 10 9 157 592 - 84 21 6 946 064 Snap in adapter 84 10 9 182 792 is for the 1G iPhone. The 3G adapters that I have been receiving from Bimmernav for mods are 84 21 2 151 038. Have not seen the 3G iPhone adapter 84 21 2 151 043 so cannot comment. Suggest contacting Bimmernav to see if they have any information on this part. The other 2 iPhone adapters require modification to fit into the console eject box and the console eject box also requires modification. Only comment I have on the external antenna is that unless you are on the fringe of cell coverage ( I am ) not that big of a bang for buck. Not sure from your comments if you have BT in your X5 or are looking to install it, so as far as the bumper antenna, no experience in installing one in an e53. Perhaps someone here or over on the BT forum on bimmerbaord can help you out. Hope this sorts some of the confusion, not adds to it. Craig |
Another option you might be interested in. If you have dice fitted for the iphone a spec.dock from 2point5 is an alternative. Fits in the ashtray of the E53 & charges phone too!!
|
so if i get a 3G iphone, all i have to do to my 1st gen iphone cradle is machine the sides down a bit so it fits?
|
No. You need to buy the new 3g adaptor & trim that down !

Craig- Just wanted to update this post a bit, hopefully to make it clearer.
In addition I have some specific questions (bold red) so if anyone has answers to them, please let me know. For the E53 X5 and the E70 X5: - Eject Box (aka "System Base Plate") current p/n: 84-10-9-168-940 Retail $101.57 (All the other p/n's (including -063, -415) have been superseded with this one) - Snap-In Adapter Apple iPhone 1G: 84-10-9-182-792 $135.97 Retail - Snap-In Adapter Apple iPhone 3G/3GS: 84-21-2-151-038 has been superseded with 84-21-2-158-682 Retail $152.94 Now, according to the chart I posted on this thread: http://www.xoutpost.com/electronics/...full-list.html The E53 X5 requires these two parts for either of the two iPhone snap-in adapters: Eject Box Frame: 84-21-2-153-098 $99.65 Retail Adapter Cable: 84-10-9-205-271 $10.20 Retail So I assume that eject box 84-21-2-153-098 is to be used in place of eject box 84-10-9-168-940 when using a iPhone snap-in adapter and this makes sense since the 84-10-9-168-940 eject box has side walls and thus is much narrower than the 84-21-2-153-098 eject box that has no side walls on it and can accommodate the iPhone snap-in adapters properly. Other than the actual size difference of the two eject boxes (84-10-9-168-940 & 84-21-2-153-098) I don't know if there is a functional difference electronically. If anyone knows let me know. Now, apparently there are newer iPhone "USB" adapters for E70 X5's made after 10/2008 (2009 model year) that not only allow for telephone functionality, but also for music playback from the iPhones: - Snap-In Adapter Apple iPhone 1G: 84-10-9-164-213 $195.02 Retail - Snap-In Adapter Apple iPhone 3G/3GS: 84-21-2-151-043 has been superseded with 84-21-2-158-683 Retail $ 220.92 - And a snap-in adapter for the Apple Touch: 84-21-2-162-534 Retail $203.94 I have no idea if any of these three will work or can be modified to work on an E53 X5, any clue? This post is a work-in-progress and I will try to attach as many pictures as I can to it. So far I have found pictures for -038, -043, -098, -271, -415, -682, -792, -940. I still need photos of -213, -534, -683. If you have any additional information or photos or better photos that you would like to add please let me know. I have some final questions that hopefully someone can answer: 1. I know the 84-21-0-415-023 (Motorola RAZR V3, V3i) snap-in adapter can be custom modified to fit a 84-21-6-933-415 eject box. Will a modified 84-21-0-415-023 also fit the 84-10-9-168-940 eject box? 2. Will the 84-21-0-415-023 snap-in adapter fit the 84-21-2-153-098 eject box? 3. Does anyone have photos of the 84-21-0-442-784 (Motorola V8, V9m) snap-in adapter? 4. Does anyone have photos of the 84-21-0-442-785 (Motorola V9) snap-in adapter? Quote:

Hey - You said you installed the -043 snap in adapter in your E53 X5 with no problem. Can you post some photos of it? Also what eject box did you use and did you need to also install an adapter cable?

Some Further Adapter Info
The current snap in adapter for the 3Gs is the 682. The 683 adapter is NLA. An interesting fact (generalized statement here) on this is that the iPhone adapters that ended in a 2 were for charge phone only and the adapters that ended in a 3 were for smart phone integration (6NL option usually). The 682 is the replacement for the 683. And when you open it up, the usual 3 wires that went from the PCB to the iPhone dock for charging have been replace with a ribbon cable that contains 15 'wires' coming back to the PCB that connects to the eject box. This would explain why the 682 now supports the smart phone intergration option on the newer models.
Of interest is that there is a smart phone retrofit kit (sorry part number on yellow sticky at work) which appears to replace the console eject box to allow the intergration to the iDrive/CCC/CDC. However BMW will not sell anymore to Canada due to customer dis-satisfaction. It would be interesting to get ahold of one of the kits to see what is contained and what signals are coming from the eject box. I have not yet had time to trace out the ribbon cable on the 682 to see what pins on the iPhone dock it connects with and what contacts on the PCB/eject box conector it connects. This adapter opens up some interesting possibilities. Apologise to X5 Meister for not responding to previous questions. Have sorted issues with not receiving alerts from Xoutpost. Craig |
Are you sure about the 682 / 683 thing, because I don't think so. My understanding is that they are both available (read my posts # 18 and # 19 in this thread) and for different purposes.
See also post # 43 here: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...on-ever-5.html In summary though, the -682 is the 3G/3GS adapter for the E53 & E70 while the -683 is the USB 3G/3GS adapter for the E70 made after 10/2008 (2009 model year). Quote:

My understanding is, for the e70:
1. If you have the 6FL (usb/audio interface) and/or the 6NF (smartphone integration) options, you must get a USB adapter to suit your iPhone: Apple iPhone™ 3G S 84 21 2 158 683 Apple iPhone™ 3G 84 21 2 158 683 Apple iPhone™ 84 10 9 164 213 If you have the 6FL but not the 6NF option, you will not be able to play music through your iPhone, even if you get one of the above adapters. 2. If you have neither 6FL nor 6NF, then you need a non-USB adapter: Apple iPhone™ 3G S 84 21 2 158 682 Apple iPhone™ 3G 84 21 2 158 682 Apple iPhone™ 84 10 9 182 792 A non-USB adapter only enables bluetooth, charging and connection to car antenna. No music play. |
All I can comment on is that when I tried to order a 683 adapter, the part comes up as No Longer Available in the computer. When I ask what is replaceing the 683 adapter, the reply from BMW was
For the iPhone USB adapter, use the updated p# 84 21 2 158 682 instead of '683. To use 682 the vehicle needs to have the upgraded version of USB kit. it can be factory ordered or may be retrofitted according to the vehicle. Perhaps the 683 can still be ordered in the states. The same could go for 84 64 0 307 591, upgrade kit for bluetooth with USB/Audio interface. Craig |
Interesting info. As far as I know both the 682 and 683 are available in the states. The 591 comes up as NLA in the states and is apparently a Europe only kit for the 6 series only (630i, 536d, 645Ci, 650i, M6).

I would presume that if the US still has stock on the 683 adapter it will be sold out before offering the replacement. Simple economics. Costs wise the 683 was selling for @$243 and the 682 sells for @$130 up north here.
Since all I am looking for is an eject box/base to 'borrow' parts from, the 591 kit was a good candidate. After all there is no 6NF option for an e38. Minor bump in the road of modding. Craig |
Ok, since I can't get my 6FL to work reliably to charge my iPhone 3GS.
I decided to add the snap in adapter. My e70 has 6FL and blue tooth (BMW assist etc...) but DOES NOT HAVE smart phone integration (obviously). I talked with Jason at getbmwparts.com by email this morning. Jason took a look at my VIN and told me all the wiring I need is already in the car. As is the proper center console. The part numbers he gave are 51169203443 for the Eject box w/support frame. He gave me a link to the proper adapter for the iPhone 3GS. Sorry I don't have the part number; but none of the numbers listed for the adapter in this thread match any number I've been able to find. As soon as I get the parts; hopefully next week I'll post the part numbers. BTW, Jason was a big help and a great resource. I called ever dealer here in San Diego and talked to the parts guys, including two "managers". Each had different part numbers and costs (one gave me a cost of $1,200.00). A couple told me it just couldn't be done. One email to Jason with my VIN and I got the correct part numbers and, install instructions. Total cost a little more than $300.00 and what looks to be maybe an hour of work in my garage. The only question I don't have an answer to yet is if my X will need to be reflashed, but I doubt it since I already have BT and 6FL installed. Anyway, that my .02 so far. I'll post when the parts come in and are installed... |

Did some research into the bumper antenna question and with some excellent help from big bob here is what I found out.
The two BMW bumper antennas kits 84-51-0-016-669 and 84-11-1-470-326 really have the same antenna in them, which is a Hirschmann MCA 18 90 SF bumper antenna. See link: Hirschmann Car Communication This antenna is rated as follows: AMPS: 824 - 894 MHZ GSM 900: 880 - 960 MHz GSM 1800: 1710 - 1880 MHz GSM 1900: 1850 - 1990 MHz According to Hirschmann, the two antenna kits have antennas with the same functionaily, the only difference is the plug. 84-11-1-470-326 kit has an antenna with a Fakra Code A plug. 84-51-0-016-669 kit has an antenna with the FME female plug. By the way, the MCA 18 90 SF antenna also has the FME female plug. Note that in the 84-51-0-016-669 kit the part number of the actual antenna is 84-51-0-016-668. Why the 84-11-1-470-326 retails for $67.50 while the 84-51-0-016-669 retails for $220.95 is a complete mystery. (Maybe it's like what they did with the auxiliary input options: http://www.xoutpost.com/electronics/...eferences.html) BMW calls the 84-51-0-016-669 kit "Dualband 900/1800 MHz" which I suppose is technically correct (since it does operate on those frequencies, but not exclusively only those frequencies) and it is listed in the ETK as applicable to Europe and the USA. BMW makes no such statement about the 84-11-1-470-326, strangely enough. Lastly, just an FYI according to big bob who certainly knows his stuff: 850=GSM850 (USA) 900=GSM900 (EU) 1800=DCS1800(EU) 1900=PCS1900(USA) AMPS=CDMA (USA) My guess is that by calling the 84-51-0-016-669 kit "Dualband 900/1800 MHz" BMW is trying to identify this as a part for Europe which jives with the Europe installation instructions (BMW NA installation instructions are not nearly as detailed, organized or well-written). Here is a link to the BMW installation instructions for the 84-51-0-016-669 which will be applicable to the 84-11-1-470-326 (as there are no separate instructions for the 84-11-1-470-326): http://www.bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/bl...-%20Aerial.pdf Those instructions also mention p/n 84-51-0-137-629 which I haven't been able to find any mention of anywhere. I will also attach Hirschmann's own installation instructions and the pdf fact sheet of the MCA 18 90 SF bumper antenna once I shrink the pdf files (the board's limit has GOT to be increased). Finally, here is the link to the excellent installation write-up done by Jeff330xi: http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/all...bluetooth.html Hope this helps someone. Quote:

Can you give some details? What part numbers you used? Did you do any custom modification? How well it works and are you satisfied with the end result, etc?

I just fitted the one you posted below and trimmed the sides with a dremel for the iphone to fit .....30 min job
TBH the only thing it gives is the ability to charge the phone HTH's http://www.xoutpost.com/attachments/...-9-182-792.jpg |
I was hoping for a little bit better follow-up then that. What I posted was much more extensive than what you are referencing. I am totally unclear what you installed and for what phone. According to BMW and the information I posted, had you bought the correct parts and the complete set you would not have to do any trimming of the sides and your phone would not only charge, but if would be hands free and also utilize the antenna in the car.

BMW Snap In Bluetooth Cradle For Motorola V8/9 on eBay (end time 26-Jul-10 10:58:53 BST) |
Original iPhone Mod
Did this back in 07 when the Original iPhone came out. Had Soundsational custom make a fiberglass housing. No button needed to pop the phone out, it stayed in place all the time. To get out I just lightly pushed the phone forward.

Craig,
I realize this is form an old post, but I just read it today. I have a 2001 E38, and I love it. So, I want to "elegantly" snap p in my iPhone (just for charging purposes) and I just wonder where to find the following spare parts you recommended a few years back (unless there is a better option). - 84 10 9 168 940 - 84 21 2 151 038. My plan is to complement these, with a couple of Chinese made GPS/BT/DVD that claim to be plug in compatible in the E38, while still allowing me to use the steering wheel controls. Your advise will be greatly appreciated. Luis. |
