2004 vs 2005 Bluetooth w/ iPhone

I know this topic has prob been beaten to death so forgive me for starting a new one. I've read through a lot of threads and just want to make sure I've got everything..

1. Late model 2004's have the bluetooth option
2. There is a different bluetooth in each year... Visteon module 2004 and Motorola module in the 2005

I am looking at a 2004 3.0i sport/prem pkg prod date 8/05.. First I want to know what the odds are that it has bluetooth.. second, if my iPhone will work with the Visteon module..

Thanks for your help

You have a 50% shot. I think they were officially in every car after September. Can you test it out before purchasing it? Your Iphone should work with both modules if you have version 2.2.1 on your iphone I believe. It is best to test it out before buying. There are instructions for pairing on the forum that you can take with you.

Best of luck!

Worst case scenario, upgrading the TCU to a slightly newer version with Bluetooth and voice recognition is very easy.

According to BMW's Service Information bulletin document SI B84 13 04, E53 (X5) models from 10/04 production with Premium Package (ZPP) or BMW Assist (SA 639) had Bluetooth. Additionally, E53 vehicles manufactured after 4/05 had voice recognition built-in as part of the TCU.

Since you are looking at an 8/04 E53 you will not have Bluetooth, nor will you have voice recognition, unless a prior owner upgraded the TCU.

8/05 was a typo, the prod date is actually 8/04.. so I guess its still up in the air. I appreciate the info though, its helpful to know that the TCU upgrade is not that difficult

Based on that date, it is highly likely the car does not have Bluetooth. Bluetooth was officially introduced in the 2005 model year, and the 8/04 car was a few months prior to 2005 MY production.

On the plus side, here is another encouraging statement in that same SIB: "E53 vehicles produced between 3/2004 and 8/2004 are equipped with a TCU that does not support Bluetooth. On these vehicles, the TCU can be replaced at the customer's expense with a 2005 MY TCU."
