Voice Recognition

Hey I have a 2005 e53 with bluetooth. How do I use voice recognition? Also how do I know if i have it or not?

Brian-bmw 11-27-2009 10:54 AM

Push and hold the "sneezing man" button on the steering wheel to activate VR.

hunds02, what was your X5's birthday? Mine was built in May 05, and has the VR feature. I think it was added to the 05 model year in May, or shortly before. If yours was built very early in the model year, it probably doesn't have it.

Yea, I think you're right, mine was 01/2005... sucks.
Is there a way to get the VR module?

statdoc 11-29-2009 03:18 PM

Yes, but new price is ~$1000. You can occasionally find a used one for less.

You can get a brand new TCU with VR and Bluetooth from Tischer BMW for $328. You could either send your old TCU back for the $50 core, or sell it for around $200. Of, course, you would need to get the new one coded in your car for VR, assist, etc.

What is the part number of your TCU module? It is possible that your car has VR, but it has just been disabled by dealer coding. If that is the case, then all you need is coding to re-enable it.

If you have the Assist module then VR is expensive to retrofit. If you don't have Assist but do have Bluetooth then you can activate VR with NavCoder and a Resler iBus interface.

With Assist, adding VR is just a swap and coding. The module is $328 and coding is usually 1 hour of labor. Or, if you don't care about reactivating the Assist feature, then it is just a module swap and you can do the VR-enable coding with NavCoder.

I count $328 as 'expensive' compared to coding VR on the Bluetooth ULF which is free if you already have NavCoder and a Resler interface.

My two cents: it aint worth adding. I have it and can say in all honesty that unfortunately it is pretty useless. It doesnt reconize my voice at all. I say "CD" it takes me to the phone book. I say anything else, it errors and says "system off." Too bad too. Could be a very good tool.

TCU/SES/ULF

Hello

I have a TCU with part no 84 10 6963758 in my euro 2006 BMW X3 2.0d
This is working great, but i have no voice recognition.

Anyone know if this is possible to enable through NavCoder?
Or is it best to replace the part with a ULF, or add a SES module?

Regards,
Bjarte

What are the available commands?

M_Six 12-07-2009 09:52 PM

My Razr was dying so I NE2'd and got an LG EnV3, which is on BMW's list of approved BT phones. Well the phone pairs up ok (13th GEN BT), but the phonebook won't upload (apparently an LG issue). So I decided to use the built-in voice command phonebook. All went well until I entered my friend's name (Dana). Now every time I try to enter a new name, it beeps and says "Dana" and then "This name is already saved." It does not matter what I say, it still thinks I'm saying Dana. So I have a new phone but no way to dial from the phone's contacts and no way to enter more names in the voice activated phonebook. Frustrating.

A side peeve to this is the lack of BT standardization. There's no good reason why BT shouldn't be standardized so all BT phones work with all BT hands-free systems. Can you imagine the headache if all devices had their own individualized TCP/IP protocol?

VR via ULF mit SES

Hi
O.K. I'm a bit of a newbie.:imnew:
From what I read, I should have Voice Recognition but it doesn't work.

2005 X5 3.0d
I have ULF mit SES p/n 84-21 6-955522-04

When I press the steering wheel button it simply redials the last number. No VR.:dunno:

Am I right in assuming that this feature simply needs to be coded, and that I can do this with the Resler interface and some coding software?

If I get this voice recognition coded and working, does it work just with the bluetooth or will it provide VR for the nav as well?

thanks in advance - Toadhall1248 Tasmania - Australia

You need to press and HOLD the 'talky man' button - if VR is active, then you will hear a beep. If not, you don't have the option coded (read bought and paid for) for your car.

I had the same issue with my X3, and the dealer couldn't (wouldn't) recode for the correct SA to activate it. So by buying the Resler i/f and Navcoder I did it myself. Navcoder also has lots of other benefits too, and is well worth paying for

Hey Guys, I just installed an SES module. Sometimes I have competing voices, both the man's and woman's voice especially during navigation commands. Anyone know how to get rid of that? Thanks.

Quicksilver 02-23-2010 04:02 PM

I didn't pay anywhere near that price. $250.00 new I believe. And I installed it myself. It took more time to find the cable than it did to install it.
Edit: I looked it up... Turns out it was $414.00 total.

You did not tell us what kind of Bluetooth module you have-- ULF or TCU. That affects which path might make more sense for you.

You have two devices with voice recognition enabled.
  1. Either remove the SES and use the VR feature in your Bluetooth module.
  2. Or, use NavCoder to disable the VR in your Bluetooth module.

This is the best option, as that feature only gives voice support for telephone. The SES should give voice support for Nav and Telephone.

Minor correction: The TCU only has voice commands for phone. The ULF has voice commands for both nav and phone.

SES also give Nav and Phone. So TCU + SES will mean competing voices but one will only want to talk about phone, and the other will want to talk about phone and nav.

I have TCU + SES so i've disabled VR on the TCU

xyber233 02-25-2010 01:36 PM

Sorry I forgot to mention it. I have a TCU with the SES. Thanks for the suggestions!

X5 Meister 03-08-2010 05:10 AM

Specifically:

"For E46 and E83 vehicles up to 3/05 production and E85 and E53 vehicles up to 4/05 production, voice activation functions are not part of the TCU. A separate SES module can be installed. Refer to the EPC."
