Microphone Mute with BT?
 

I think this may be a totally dumb question, but I can't find an answer via search. The BMW website has no mention of this either.

Is there a way to mute the microphone during a call? I'm often on conference calls while driving, and the microphone picks up surrounding noise - making a disturbance on the call.

Is there a way to mute the microphone when I'm not talking?

The only way that I think might work is to mute from the phone itself. It would certainly be better if it could be done from the steering wheel though...

I have a question along the same lines - sometimes I have a client in my X5 and a personal call comes through on my Motorole RAZR on the speakerphone, or the ambient noise is such that the speakerphone is not appropriate. Is there a way to switch the call back over to the phone so I can have a private and/or audible conversation?

No. I have tried 1000 times. With my Moto v710, you can bring up a menu during a call to "use handset" (in other words, drop the Bluetooth connection to the car), and it works for a few seconds. Then, the BT connection reconnects automatically. Frustrating!!!

They way I handle that situation is like this:

1. If the phone is ringing, and you see that it is a personal call, just answer it on the phone. The call will never be heard over the speakers.

2. If you have already answered the phone (such as with the steering wheel button), you should be able to transfer the call to your phone. Most phones, while connected to your X5 via BT, will give you an option on the screen that says 'Transfer Call' or 'Audio Transfer', or similar phrase. (not sure about RAZR) You just select transfer, and the call immediate goes private in the handset. Some phones won't do it.

I do this a lot when I am stepping out of my X5 and still on the phone. I will just hit 'transfer audio' on the phone and the call disconnects from the car and continues on the phone itself.

Wow, that was quick! Thanks, statdoc, even though that's bad news. I only got this phone last week to go with my new X5. Hopefully I can return it -- my family won't call me in the car because the sound quality is so bad for them, so I'm not using as much as I had anticipated.

:xoutpost: I had the Razr, now I have the MOTO E815. When you are on a BT call, open up your phone > hit the menu button > choose disconnect bluetooth. This will disconnect your BT and allow you to have a private conversation via your handset. A couple of questions for you, maybe obvious, maybe not. Do you roll the windows up and turn down the fan when on a BT call? Your microphone has an arrow on it, and it needs to be pointed towards the windshield. Maybe yours is turned towards the rear of the vehicle? Outside of those 2 things, I rarely get complaints about BT calls via my system. Let us know if you have any other questions.
