Dealer says this is not a BT TCU....Could he be incorrect?
Here is a photo of the module itself from my 2004 x5

Your dealer is correct. See this post with an excellent reference of TCU part numbers that have BT support: Here's a great TCU part number reference.
|
The PDF list linked says "probably no bluetooth, but not sure" but the label clearly shows the bluetooth symbol, bluetooth ID number and bluetooth pass key... so I'd say that TCU definitely has bluetooth. Now whether or not your vehicle is equipped with all the other needed parts like bluetooth antenna, mic etc. is beyond me.
|
Definitely not.
|
Then why the bluetooth info on the label???
|
The generaly consensus is that BMW had a late production issue with the 2004 model year TCU modules. But, the people printing the labels did not get the message. The result is that 2004 TCU modules either have BT internally disabled, or they never had it in the first place, yet the part number stickers all have the BT logo and information.
|
Forgive me if I am missing something here, but isn't this easy to figure out? Put your phone in search mode within the first few seconds of cranking up the BMW. If it finds a BT source, you have it. If not, you don't. :dunno:
|
It looks like the BT Module in my X3. The two missing labels had the sync code printed on it.

Part 84116952218 (Telematics Control Unit) was found on the following E53 vehicles: E53 X5 3.0i SAV, M54, USA (FA53) : Single parts SA 639, trunk
For vehicles with Preparation f mobile phone cpl. USA/CDN S639A=Yes Adapter Snap-In You have S639A not S644A=Yes Preparation f mobile phone w Bluetooth S633A=Yes Preparation, mobile phone, Business Where S639A = COMPLETE PREP. CELLULAR PHONE USA/CDN Preparation f mobile phone cpl. USA/CDN So you may have been prewired, and the TCU fitted to make it compatible with a Snap In adaptor. Why the BT doesn't work is a mystery. Take it apart and post photos of the radio connected to the cream antenna. Make sure the writing on the chips is visible. You may find the radio is under a sheilding can. |
Will take it apart and post some photos.

This
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...2/IMG_0460.jpg Is the flash memory for the 2.4GHz radio. What is on the other side of that daughter card? |
Sorry. What area?
|
Under that daughter card. Remove the screw, unplug an photograve the underside. You may find a CSR radio there. I think you might be dissaponted, as it looks like you have the same unit (albeit CDMA version) Stringback has here.

Mine had the same, complete with Bluetooth boards inside, but I never got it working. I bought a ULF in the end.
Anyway, back to yours. As jochen explained to me the firmware that it runs may not allow Bluetooth to work. He can change the software settings with navcoder but not the firmware. So, I strongly recommend that you buy navcoder and let jochen play with it online. |

Corresponding the BMW SB, TCU produced before 08/2004 doesnt have working bluetooth.
I fixed this by replace my unit to the one produced in 07/2005. Easy plug-n-play replacement, voice control etc. Mine cost about $100 (used, in Russia). I talked with the one unofficial bmw service man, he told me that he can hack these early TCU, but I never check this - I have one worked. I bought another one, produced in 2008 for my friend, it was european and has the sim-card slot on the side, some phone functionality worked, but in common it wasn't paired with my cellular, I mean this TCU was working as independent phone. I'd like to note also that since 2008 was BMW information bus type replacement IBUS -> MOST (optical) so be carefull when buying fresh TCU - if them marked as MOST - but your car has IBUS it wont fit. |
So it sounds like I don't have Bluetooth?
Any recommendations as to what I need to purchase to en Ble the bt on this one? Replacement chip or whole new box? Regardless if someone can point me I. The right direction I would appreciate it. Very new at this type of stuff. |

The easiest solution is to replace entire TCU (to the another corresponding the attached matrix ) with the production date more than at least 09/2004.
|
Any advice on where to purchase? I am certainly ok with used.
Also, once I get the new tcu is it plug and play or will I need to pay the dealer for coding. |
eBay is a great source for a used TCU. Just pay attention to the part number to be sure it is one that has BT and is compatible with an I-Bus car.
I recommend that you use NavCoder to code it. This is way faster and more reliable than taking it to the dealer. |

Bought mine replacement at local used parts sale. Bought another one at eBay. I don't think to much worry about buying there. Just pay attention to the labels and numbers on the TCU.
TCU is designed to be extremely safe and reliable, because assyst is a part that responsible for health and life of the driver, it should work even in case of serious crash. Almost nothing to broke there, no mechanics inside, solid electronics and bold alluminium box as body. |
This thread should be archived.

Before I go and make a huge rookie mistake...

Thanks. Yes I will use that link. |
I think I found one...
I found a Motorola TCU at a local u pull it that I think will work. The part number is 84116946993. I've already verified that all of th witing is present adn have pulled the Assist module out...Hoping that I can replace it with this one. Just dont want to spend a few hundred dollars only to find out that it will not work. Wahts the downside on no voiceinput...I will be pairing it with an Iphone 3GS. Any comments/advice would be apreciated. |
No voice input means that you can not initiate calls via voice recognition. With voice recognition, you push and hold the "sneezing man" button and tell the car either a phone number or use name. Then, it talks to the phone and makes the call. I love it and use it almost exclusively to call out. Others don't like voice recognition and never use it. It is personal preference.

You can safely delete the word "probably" from that list. If it says "probably no" it really means "no Bluetooth." The author was just being conservative.
Here is the reasoning... 1) The first confirmed BT was found in modules that started manufacturing in September 2004 for the 2005 model year. 2) The list is in BMW supersession order (older modules in the supersession list are not going to have more features than newer modules). Module 84.10-9 12 0844 was confirmed not to have BT; therefore all earlier modules will not have it. |
If anyone comes across a BT enabled TCU for a 2004 x5 I am an eager buyer...Email me at jeffjangell at gmail dot com or PM me here.

The TCU modules are all retroactively compatible in I-Bus cars as old as 1995. So, what you are really looking for is a TCU from a 2005 or newer X5, E46, X3 or Z4. Unless a previous owner did a retrofit, it is unlikely that you will find a TCU-BT module that will come from a 2004 model year X5. Therefore, shop specifically for one of these TCU part numbers. Which car or which year does not matter.

yes. Absolutely. Many thanks Brian.
