My back hurts.
I decided to take advantage of the nice weather yesterday afternoon and reach for the Zaino and plenty of Wayne's Towels. Since I've been using Zaino exclusively and religiously for the past couple of years, I decided to skip the Dawn wash this year and begin the process with a Z7 wash, followed by a thorough clay bar treatment, with a capful of Z7 and lots of water mixed in a spray bottle, liberally applied (thank you, X5Jay ), followed by another Z7 wash. Next… Z2Pro (with Zfx) on, Z2Pro off (Lightly spritzing the applicator with Z6 helps in applying the Z2Pro.) Z6 on, Z6 off Repeat the above process, three times. Followed by… Z8 on, Z8 off For the rims... Z2Pro on, Z2Pro off Z6 on, Z6 off Multiply by two. And... After I washed the wheel wells, I gave them a blast with Griot's Undercarriage Spray. I polished the Remus exhaust tips with Noxon #7 Metal Polish, dressed the tires with two coats of Z16 (good stuff, imo), and dressed the exterior trim with Griot's Vinyl & Rubber Dressing. I used Stoner's Invisible Glass on the windows. The entire process took approximately eight hours. Finally… Ibuprofen, 200mg x 3; hot shower x 30 min.; watch Sopranos. I had cleaned the interior a couple of weeks ago, using Spinneybeck on the leather, so, thankfully, that could wait. I only use Spinneybeck a couple of times per year; usually, I'll just wipe down the leather and interior trim with a damp towel, and vacuum. My weekly exterior "quick detail" consists of a Z7 wash, followed by Z6, and topped by Z8. I'll add one or two more coats of Z2Pro approx. every four weeks. Of course, it was extremely overcast today, so the pics leave much to be desired. Thanks to X5Jay, IFlyX5, Rangerfan, Driver8, and all the other fine folks for their knowledge, assistance, and advice. Euro clear headlights have been ordered. Looks great! Seems we had the same weekend (see my Zaino post a few posts below). I'm going to try what you did on the rims, but first I'm going to take each wheel off (one at a time), remove the brake dust on the backside of the rims (because you can see inside the wheels), and then clean the fender wells (Simple green and elbow grease). I love how the X5's fender wells are all shrouded...makes it real easy to clean.
BTW, this season's Soprano's kicks ass! Thank gawd for iControl (can't always watch it on Sunday). |

Yikes, that Zaino process sounds like the Five Dragons of car detailing, but what a sharp looking vehicle. Amazing. I have to practice my breathing excercises before I can detail on that level. I am such a slacker that I have piped soft water outside in order to avoid the dreaded chamois.

Thanks, folks.
Fortunately, it's only this extensive and time consuming once -- the first detail of the season. It's actually not too labor intensive, as a little Zaino goes a loong way, and it's easy on, easy off. After the initial detail of the season, I can do a Z7 wash and quick detail with Z6 topped by Z8 in about an hour, taking my time. If I add another coat or two of Z2Pro, it's about 1½ to 2 hours for a "quick" exterior detail. Thankfully, each successive coat of Z2Pro goes on (and off) much easier than the initial coat. I enjoy it. Of course, I don't have a life, so... |

Looks fantastic - great work! And I certainly agree - the first one of the season is the toughest. After that - normal wash & wax for the rest of the summer. I usually do the full process again just before winter as well. You should really try that Aerospace 303 stuff on the plastic - I was very impressed with it. Oh, I need to get me a set of those RB's too - just seems to finish the look...
