Exclamation Hard Water Spots?

I hope someone can help me.
I bought my X5 on E-Bay about 3 weeks ago. I noticed a lot of hard water spots on the Exterior Black Pillars and Shadow Trim. I have tried to get them off with household products (Lime Away, CLR, Windex) and Car Products (Polishing Cream, Mother's Back to Black). They won't come off.
I had the X5 checked out at Crevier BMW and told my SA about these water spots. He said he detailer can get them off, but he is backed up.
Ha! One week later and I still can't get an appointment.

Anyone here know how to remove them? The X5 came from Boston and I am guessing Salt/Water/Snow etc.

Maybe the spots are on the paint - which I can't see - Silver Paint

Thanks!

Lay off the household products. IMHO be paitent get it detailed and make sure you specify that you don't want to see any water spots anywhere. BTW there are a number of members here that are aquainted with Crevier BMW.

I had these also, and they bothered me too. Last week I was detailing the X, and accidently got some wax on the black chrome window trim and window pillars. I wiped the wax off, and either the wax covered the spots, or got rid of them.

A good coat or three of a CLEANER wax, such as Mother's Carnauba Cleaner Wax should erase those spots.

I had the same problem on my old X5 with NJ hard water, made the mistake of washing and leaving in sun without drying. I was able to wax/polish off the paint but nothing will work on glass and sunroof. I finally used Spot-X on glass and it worked. You can get Spot-X at home depot.

Can you tell with your fingers if the stain is above the paint (water deposit) or below the paint (etching)?

If it's above the paint, try the clay bar as recommended. If you're not sure on how to use a clay bar, try Meguiar's X Scratch remover. Use a light application with a microfiber towel or an old cotton t-shirt.

If it's below the paint line, the X Scratch remover will remove it if the etching is superficial.

If it's a deep etching (enoough to catch a fingernail), then a detailer will have to polish it out with a orbital polisher. Elbow grease alone won't be enough to smooth out the surface.

After removing the surface defects, you'll need to apply some paint protection like wax and sealant. Might as well do the entire vehicle. See the detailing section on recommended ways of maintaining the finish of your X5.

Got an appointment from Creiver BMW next Tuesday. Ha! Only took a week to make an appointment. Going to get another SA.

Some great info. guys - I will try some of your suggestions as I want to see if you guys are right.

Yea you are right about the household cleaners. I will stay away from that; but I like to try the X-Spot stuff.

WoW!!

Okay I did most of the stuff you recommended and the water spots would not go away.
I did the Clay Bar, Mother's Carnauba Cleaner Wax, Dawn, Wax the area four times. Not in that order. Try more household products that remove calicum deposits.
But they wouldn't go away.
Well on Tuesday I brought the car to Crevier BMW for the detail and went back on Wednesday to pick her up.

Yes!!
The Water Spots are gone on the pillars. I am so happy.

Thanks for helping me - I think asawadude was correct that an orbital was needed.

Isopropyl alcohol ALWAYS works on hard water spots. It's also good for removing tree sap from the paint without damaging the paint.
