Costco Tire Policies

Was at costco picking up a battery...overheard the tire desk guy talking to a Asian woman and her mom.

"well, bad news".... he says that he cannot replace only one tire because (1) she has T rated and needs a H. AND, (2) her car is an AWD and they must replace all 4 tires to keep the sized matched and avoid driveline damage.

He said the other three are fine, but would be different sized than the new replacement.

He gave her a price for 4 new tires, snappy Bridgestones (they are onsale this week) and she left.

As he was ringing up my battery,I asked 'say, how much mismatch does costco allow, before they will refuse to mount a new tire?" He said 2/32.

Guy seemed like an asshole, so I didnt press with any facts or rationale.

Its no wonder we can pick up lightly used tires on ebay for dirt cheap....the companies that pick up old tires from Costco and other tire shops regularly screen and sell these used tires.

Finally, people are getting amazingly screwed, day in and day out.

I wanted to follow her out, tell her to go to another shop- but couldnt risk losing my place in line...
