Thanks Colin.
Hi fatboyoz,

I am probably too late to help with your purchase of the Advans, but I just bought 4 tyres from tirerack, delivered within 5 days (!!) to my garage (and stacked !!) for about half the price I was being quoted by Sydney tyre retailers. Fitting was $15 per tyre.

This won't last; the A$ / US$ exchange rate is currently in our favour, but the bigger issue is that when word gets back to the Australian distributors they will simply threaten to stop selling their tyres to tirerack and I would expect that tirerack will oblige and stop mailing tyres outside US. We need a global ACCC or a good lawyer!

Great service from tirerack.com; crap from the Aussie distributors.

The rat.

Hi Rat,
The 19" Avans are great. So far I have covered 3500km and they exhibit very little noise. Had the wheel alignment guy dial out as much of the rear, negative camber as he could. Am now keeping a close eye on the rear tyre wear and will adjust the rear camber myself if necessary. The whole deal cost me $1975. Didn't even think about personally importing the tyres. I used to do it for my old 1990 535 IS. It had the old metric diameter (415mm, approx' 16.5 inch) wheels that took Michelin TRX tyres. They were exceedingly noisy and almost impossible to get in Oz. After carting 8 tyres (one by one) back from Hong Kong (half price), I eventually bought 4 wheels/tyres, trade-in from the latest 5 Series, from Bob Jane for $1800, and it was like driving a completely new car.
Colin.
