Spare tire 4.8is

Has anyone tried shoehorning a full size spare into the well of an '05 4.8is?? It seems that there may be room under the sliding cargo deck if I ditch the tire cover.

Depends on what you mean by full size. My 4.4 has a "full size" 17" tire back there, but I don't thing it would fit over your brakes on the 4.8, and I don't think anything bigger would fit back there. Why would you want to add a bigger tire and more weight anyhow?

I'd like to have a 20" tire as a spare for trips towing my boat long distances...I don't want to leave the boat somewhere to look for a tire shop while on vacation for a week in the keys. I guess an 18 or 19 might do in a pinch, but I'm not sure how the X would handle with boat in tow.

Since they are staggered which size do you plan to use as spare?

Hey Chuck, I think you'll find that the X is an eXcellent tow vehicle. I don't think an 18 or 19 will fit back there very well, but if it makes you feel better, you could carry a larger tire and just put it on top of your load floor. How much of a distance do you need to tow the boat and how big (weight) is the boat & trailer? If it's not too much of a distance, I think the standard spare will do just fine if you take it easy.

There is a design which has been sent in for review which will allow mounting of a spare wheel outside the trunk door on the exterior on the E70.

I make at least one trip a year to the keys (8-9 hour trip) with a 4,000lb boat/trailer. I guess I could get a 20' spare and load it in the boat like I do with the spare for the trailer. The 17inch will be fine for around town.
