ABS reset ?? CV boot replace??

My 2001 x5 4.4 (only 30,000 mi) needs the right front cv boot replaced, the axel is fine. I have been told by the dealer that only they can do this work as only they have a special tool for this job and that the ABS has to be reprogramed with their software or the brakes could suddenly lock up on the highway.
Is this in fact true? as a local shop that specilizes on foreign cars said that is not true they replace them all the time and they can do the work for half the price. I know them to be an honest business as they have worked on my families members cars for over 30 years. Thanks!!

Just had mine done

Had the R F boot replaced at the Dealer, total was 450. parts and Labor. 43k. The local shops here in Santa Fe pretty much work off the same hourly specs as the dealers and they use after market parts for a minor savings if you choose a quality part.
For my brake job, the 'Euro' shops quoted the same or actually higher! One guy even offered that instead of replacing the front rotors (obviously worn) to grind down the edge of the new pads so they would fit.
I have become very wary of the non dealer repair shops and decided (at least here in S FE) that the dealer is, so far, my best option.
IMHO, be careful who you choose for the work. Sometimes, you get what you pay for.
