Newbie with ?'s...
Hello Everyone!!! Im new but been lurking this site and gathering alot of info
I have a 2006 4.4i (will post pics soon) Our first BMW and I love itBut I have a question... As I drive off i hear like a noise from the wheel... sounds like the break pad or something rubbin (sounds like metal screeching) when i break it goes away... driving 40km turning the wheel to the left a tad it goes away... Can anyone chime in with some info? I really hate going to the dealer and would rather gather my info and take it from there... Like I said, great site and looking forward towards learning more about this beast they call the BMW X5... |

:xoutpost:
i used to own an '03 and bought it used. brakes or something sounded like grinding as well as I was test driving the X5 before buying it. the dealer had the pads replaced before i took it home. but of course, each experience varies...someone more technical will be able to pin point this out... don't worry...give it time...and someone here will respond!

As long as your sensor isn't going off you'll be fine. Sometimes road dust will collect on the pads and cause a squeal when braking, this is normal. Now, if you feel grinding, metal on metal, that's bad and your sensor should have gone off long before this happens.

dpgx5, definitely have it check out. I could be sticking calipers or sticking parking brakes. |

Have you checked to see if the calipers need to be replaced? If the caliper is warped or needs to be changed out it could cause a noise to be heard even though the pads are good...... Although it's not likely on an 06, but worth a peek in my opinion.

Might be worth checking the wheel hub nuts too. If not properly replaced with new and crimped, it could loosen.

Well i did have 20"rims on and switched back the stock 19's for the winter... What do you mean new and crimped? Wheel hub nuts as in the 5 bolts that hold up the tire right? Thanks

Well, the 5 each wheel bolts should be checked too, but I am referring to the wheel hub nut, one ~32mm on each side. They hold the rotor in place on the axles. I believe it is item #3 on this diagram...
