My BMW makes like a whistling sound around engine when turned on

My BMW X5 2001 4.4 makes like a whistling sound when the engine is on, what could it be. Could it be my belts, also whenever i turn on the car for the first time it makes a loud clank clank noise, not sure what is this noise.

I was told buy a street mechanic that Belt Dressing is not good to spray, it will dry belts and mess up other things in the car, like alternator. is this true?

IMO, I wouldn't spray anything on the belts. If you have a whistling sound, its more likely a sign that one of your pully bearings are worn out. But dont spray anything on your belts.

Its been my experience w/a 318ti, 318is & M3, all E36's that this has been attributed to the PCV valve being clogged or broken.

Vacuum leak usually displays itself in the form of a rough idle, SES/Check engine light signaling misfire in a cylinder(s).

But stranger things have happened. I remember that one time I heard a whistling noise coming from under the hood and I got under the car to change the oil and *BAM* there was a whistle - stuck to the inside of my airdam.

Just kidding but when diagnosing 'noises' - it can be at least a hundred different reasons.
