Wheel Bearings vs. Control Arm
New to the site and to BMWs. Have an 02' with 64,000 miles. I have only put on 5,000 of them. Have an occasional grinding, feel through the floorboards, and shake of the steering wheel almost like an unbalanced tire sometimes present, sometimes not so much. Was thinking the wheel bearing, but some posts leave me questioning the possibility of control arm bushing? Wondering, how to determine which of the two is the problem and in the case of the wheel bearing how to figure out which wheel? Finally, are both DIY provided I get the right 'puller tool' for the bearings? Thanks in advance for any help and taking the time to reply. |

Just in the offchance that this helps someone.
Turned out to be a frozen caliper on the front passenger side. Did pads, rotors and calipers on the front and runs and coasts like a dream. |

In my case it was a sometimes there and sometimes not. Guess depending on whether or not the caliper had released from the rotor when foot taken off of brake. I sortof noticed it more at higher speed where it felt almost like an unbalance.
But if you put the car in neutral and block the wheels you can jack it up one wheel at a time and see if they turn freely. If one does not turn freely then that could very well be the issue. Again, just in my case but once the wheel was off, based on the rust and general state of the existing caliper it was clear the thing was in rough shape. Hope that this helps and good luck. |

what did you get for your brake set up? drilled and slotted, brands, price? I have the same problem. Someone on here told me bent/warped rotors, but I was thinking more like transfer case or something like that. It's a humming/grinding noise. I can really only hear it going slow but I can actually feel it in the floor

Funny I've had the same problem. Did you purchase a new caliper or just repair the locked one? Where did you get your set up?
