E46 M3 fake brake duct?!
Explanations?! Seems like it would be pretty bad to do track events like this, that the passenger's side would overheat far faster than the driver's side...........

I think that the cover for the left side was removed. If I recall correctly, and I could be wrong, those duct were covered for liability reasons. There is a fear that rocks and other debris could enter and impair brake functioning. If you look up inside the wheel wells of the X5 there are similar covers that are closed. They are presumably brake cooling ducts that have been closed. Likewise, the E39 M5 has ducting blocked off. You will see some E39 M5's with chrome rings in the lower front grille that have been cut out by the owner to open up the brake ducts. I'll try and find some pics.

hm. curious. why would the prior owner have removed only one of them?! i'd certainly like to cut out the right side as well .......
and as for debris getting in there, haha yeah i saw a piece of styrofoam lodged in there btw... i should take pix but, it's not a huge rectangular cut out: more like ... hm ... imagine a square with 4 quadrants, and each quadrants has 2 cut-outs each: XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX where the X's are cut out of the surrounding plastic.

Here is an example of the M5 cutouts but depicted on a "regular" E39. I know that Hayaku did this on his E39 M5 and SANguru might also have done this on his.

yup.. there are no brake ducts. They were closed off very liability as Kevin said. The slats are easy to break off though especially if you track the car. if you open them up, I suggest chicken wiring it. Here's mine on my old M5..

sounds good, i'll definitely go ahead and open up the passenger side one too then, and i'll definitely install the chicken wiring.
two questions still remain however: (1) why would the prior owner have removed only one side?! (2) does it really make that much an improvement? Because if any of you remember from an older post of mine, i managed to totally boil my dad's C4S brake fluid which i would guess is a consequence of inadequate brake disc cooling too?? i don't want to have the m3 fade on me at thunderhill or buttonwillow also lol that said, i'd LOVE to try willowsprings

don't worry.. it won't fade on you.. you're not fast enough yet.. not to mention that not all track events let verts on the track even with popup roll bars.

well, the fact that i probably won't fade them is good ..... the fact that not all tracks allow verts is ..... VERY BAD!!!!! i know that NASA itself allows verts with pop-up bars ....... didn't realize certain TRACKS disallow them though

the older m3's have the cutouts with a cover on them. i don't know if the newer ones have the cover or if it was never cut out. but i've never seen an m3 that didn't have the duct hole in the fender liner.
its possible you had your fender liner replaced with one that didn't have the brake duct cut out. on the e39m5, you had to cut your own holes in the fender liner and install the factory ducts to route the air properly. here's pics of my old 03.. |
