Crossroads coming up - Go for X5M or......

Approaching the time to think about selling my 4.8is. Even with extended warranty, the out of pocket on non covered items (amp, wheel and some other odds and ends) continues to be costly.

At 105k miles it still looks and drives great but I need to consider new or nearly new replacement.

How great is it to own current generation X5M?

So, natural replacements and upgrades for me include:

X5M
Cayanne Turbo

Maybe
- MB AMG
- Jeep SRT
- Macan
- Jag Pace
- Audi QS5

Or. maybe go with 1 ton pickup for boat and camper and have no SUV. Might need this anyway if I go boat.

Had a 12 X5M, great car (totaled, not at fault, pocketed lots of cash). Now have a 12 X5 diesel, same great car. The M was more fun to drive but the diesel is not far off for half the $--plus, it tows my wakesetter better than my step dad's new silverado 1500 even in the CO mountains. Used it all summer to pull it around, did amazing. I'm not sure if the M would handle the boat as well.

I drove an 1st gen X5M and was impressed, it was similar to my 4.8is except it was faster by a huge factor. I can appreciate a diesel but probably only in a tow vehicle with enough capacity for 15k lbs. A big car trailer, boat and RV. Think I need to get out and test a newer X5M, I'm sure I'll end up wanting one and getting out of my current X5 won't be such a downer.

I'm at the same point. My 04 e53 has 168k on the OD. Its been rock solid but has had some significant work over the last two years with more to come no doubt.

I drove the e70 m last week, a fully loaded one. Incredible ride, power that rivals my 911 turbo, well thought out. The dealer is putng on new tires and I hope to pick it up Monday.

Once you've driven one, its all you'll think about. I know that was true for me ☺

I've not driven the Porsche Cayanne Turbo/S but did drive the MB, previous gen Jeep SRT and the X5M.

No one is steering me away from the BMW at this point and it's still my 1st choice for SUV replacement if I go that way.

Hey stranger -

I miss my '13 X6M every day. The current generation isn't as beastly. The transmission is smoother, more gadgets and tech stuff but I preferred the basics in the previous generation. The stance, suspension, steering and comfort. My '16 X6M just doesn't feel as solid as the '13. The new seats are no where near as comfortable as the multi contour in the E70/71.

And beware of the brake squeal on the new X5/X6 Ms. It's makes my ears bleed. A lot of owners have wheel bearing issues that haven't been resolved. So far, 8000 miles, I have the brake squeal but no bearing issues.

Make sure you test drive first.

Good luck.

cmyX6go:

I returned my 2014 BMW M6 Coupe at the end of its lease, down in Greer, SC this past June and picked up a new 2016 X5M. I now have about 6,500 miles on it so far and it is a beast! I am curious what the wheel bearing issue is that you mentioned above and what I should possibly be on the look out for...? Thanks.

A loud clicking noise when you turn the wheels. It seems to be a very common issue with the X5/X6Ms which I haven't experienced. Keeping fingers crossed. The other issue is the brake squeal. I sound like a freakin old school bus. It's embarrassing it's so loud, it's worse than fingernails on a blackboard. All my BMWs had a slight squeal when the wheels were dirty but this is constant.

Now that you have described that, I realize that I have also experienced it on my 2016 BMW X5M, about 600 miles ago. It seem to start once the vehicle had been sitting for about 2 hours and was very, very loud, only to stop completely after driving about half a mile. It has yet to return, but if and when it does, I will take it in my BMW Dealer to investigate, address and repair, as required.

Thank you....
