X5M S63 engine replacement options…

Hi X5M owners,

I am currently in the process of negotiating/purchasing a 2010 BMW X5M with 188,000km/116,817miles for $5000 with a poorly running engine (Starts and runs but misfires on Cylinder 5 & 6) and runs in Limp Mode. Doesn’t sound like rod knock, not blowing smoke out exhaust but is making a strange “popping” noise around cylinder 5&6.

It was scanned/diagnosed by the local BMW dealership as needing a replacement engine (used scan tool & bore scope). Owner was quoted $51,000..!!

I am considering purchasing a used or rebuilt BMW S63 engine…but they are both expensive! I realize the X5M S63 are extremely high performance but $10000-$15000 for a used, half worn out engine seems crazy…? I would change the engine myself to save labor cost. I still want to own & drive an X5M but maybe I should either find one with very low miles or a newer F15 model with less issues? Your thoughts?
