I need some convincing....

Hey guys.... 1st post on this forum. I need a little help and convincing about my upcoming car purchase. Here is my current car situation:

2011 Ford Taurus - Company car - daily driver
2008 M5 - Dinan S2 - was my daily until I got a new job about 6 months ago.... probably my favorite car (overall) that Ive ever had
2010 GT3 - weekend warrior.

OK... so my lease on my M5 is up at the end of summer. I am planning on getting the F10 M5 in its second or third year of production (2013 or 2014 model year) The residual on my M5 is waaay off so I dont think I am going to be able to get anything close to a good deal to buy it out at the end of the lease... so I am planning at this point to part ways with it. I want to mix it up for the next couple of years before I go back to the M5.

Here is what I was considering:
2011 550i - just too small for me.... if its not an M5, there is no way I would own something this small again.
2011 750i - awesome sedan - very big
2011 X5 50
2011 X5 M

SO, I think Ive decided that I want to give the X5 a shot for a while. I cant decide if the X5 M is worth the extra $$$. I am planning on ordering a X5 50 and getting it fully loaded. everything except for 3rd row seat. Nappa leather, everything. MSRP should be around $82k. X5 M as I spec it will come at about $99k. This car would be used for evenings, weekends, road trips, etc.

Here is the dilemma.... Im having trouble justifying the extra expense of the M. If this was a comparison between the former 4.8 engine and the M, I wouldnt hesitate. But the new turbo in the 50 is VERY good. 0-60 is claimed to be 5.3, but the X6 50 has seen 0-60 in 5.0, which alot of magazines are saying the X5 50 will likely hit too.

One other thing is that I need to tow. Not that often... maybe 5 times per year.... I track my GT3 and have been borrowing a friends truck to tow it so this is part of my reason for getting an X5. I know the M isnt "supposed" to tow, but Ive seen people do it anyways.

So, whats the opinion here? I know this is the X5 M forum but you all must admit that the new engine has made the X5 50 a great competitor.

Stock X5 50, 400hp, 440hp with powerkit

Stock X5M, 555hp. That means at least a 115hp difference.

Once you drive the new twin turbo V8s, even the regular version, you will be spoiled with instant throttle response from the broad powerband, no more revving like crazy just to get some power like the old V10.

I just traded in my 08 M3 on a new 10 X5 M. I test drove both the 5.0 and M X5s before buying and I will say the difference is well worth it after coming out of an M car. I cannot get over how well the X5 M handles in every way it is much more sports car like than the 5.0. I know that sounds funny for a 5000+ pound SAV but I feeel like I did not give up much over the M3. If money is not an issue then the X5 M wins.......Steve

Where are pics of your X5 M?

True. An M car is an M car.

If space is not an issue, go for X6 M as X6 was designed from get go to have an M badge and M division engineers were involved in initial design of X6. X5 was after thought. X6 M handling is slightly better than X5 M.

I have driven both... The M definitely moves! Money is not the issue but I still need justification for $15,000+!!

At that price range with all the extras you plan on getting, not much difference. You want the M, and you know it!

Cheers,

X5M towing a GT3. Now that's a pretty picture....

And if 555hp isn't enough, Hamann has got you covered.

Welcome to the forum, good luck with your decision. A Hamann powered (stock bodywork) X5M would be my dream rig.

X5 5.0 is a competent car. But when you option it up to mid 80's price range, the return on resale is terrible. An X5M would do much better after 3 years as far as resale is concerned. You will get at least half of price differential in resale and for 7-8 K more over several years, it is by far a better vehicle. That means something like 2-3K more for M per year.
The only thing that I would say is that the new M5 is supposed to have essentially the same engine so you won't get much of a change when time comes.

Just took some pics as the sun went down, so not the best quality. Plus a pic of my M3 with snow tires still on. Anyway, to the OP, if a test drive did not convince you that the M was worth the money then I think you have your answer.

I actually drove the M first and had to wait to the next day for them to prep the 5.0 for a test drive (just off the truck). It took me 5 minutes into the 5.0 test drive to know I had to buy the M. Good luck what ever you choose......Steve
