New member...Help with burning metallic smell

Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum.. I just purchased a 2010 x5m with 16k on it. The first night I pulled into the garage I noticed a burning metallic smell coming from under the hood.
I took it to the dealer and they said they couldn't duplicate the smell. After a lengthy discussion with a service manager he thinks that it's normal for there to be a smell due to the high heat from the turbos and placement of the cat. converters under the hood. I'm finding it hard to believe that any burning smell is normal. Can anyone shed some light on this for me??
thanks

I was at the dealer again today to check the battery... turns out I need to have the alternator replaced. I spoke with the tech who did my pump recall, he mentioned he replaced some plastic shroud around the turbo?? he said that what was causing the smell. I haven't been able to drive it hard to see if it's fixed. When I pick it up on thurs. I'll ask him exactly what he replaced and let you know if it worked.

LI-X5,

I had the buring anti-freeze smell. It was a leaking coolant hose from turbos. Fixed quickly. Now I have another smell that shows up when I am beating on it. It will go back next week.

after a little looking we found the rubber trim that is behing the plemun cover that makes the fire wall look pretty was leaning on the headers and melting ! we ripped it out and the smell is gone , now i just wonder how much rubber and plastic ive injested lol

that is good to hear you found the problem.. Mine still has it even after they said it was fixed, I was told that some smell is normal... I told my sales guy I'm not convinced it was normal to have any smell so we brought home another x5m and parked it in my garage to see if it had the burning smell... It did not. We are now talking about them taking back my car and selling me a 2010 with 5k miles on it for an extra 5k. Considering what you found I may give the service dept. another shot at fixing it. I really don't want to spend more on another one.

Well the dealer couldn't resolve the problem... So I told them they needed to take the car back... Long story short I now have a 2010 with only 5k miles on it. I didn't have to pay the 5k, so all is good. However this one does have a little of the same smell after running it hard. I would say it's only about 5% of what it was before... This leads me to believe that a little smell is normal, anything more... something is wrong. We'll see if it gets worse with time.
