In the shop...again

40k miles and the X5M has been in for a number of issues. Nothing serious but makes me nervous with warranty running out soon. It took three times to get the rear camera fixed. Once for a split vacuum hose that was causing a whistle. And now there was a burning smell that was a leaking coolant hose by the turbo. Would BMW be willing to go in half for extended warranty?

Probably not, but worth a try. What would your approach be?

Being a long term BMW owner I expect smalls things to go wrong with the occasional big ticket item (alternator, water pump, etc.).

Are you trying to extend the warranty to 6yrs/100K?

I don't see why they wouldn't give you some sort of discount on it. There is a customer loyalty program if you're a current owner and buy a new BMW you get a discount. So, something similar might be available with warranty.

Worth asking, that's for sure.

Thanks. Will give it a shot. Just frustrated. I have a 3 year old Infiniti and a year old Mazda CX-9 along with the X5M. The X5M cost twice the other two combined and neither one of them have been in the shop for anything other than oil. The X5M goes in about every 4 months with something. Makes me nervous when things like vacuum hoses and turbo coolant lines are breaking with only 10k miles until I am out of warranty.
Thought about dumping it and getting a Porsche.
Does anyone know who the BMW rep is for the Midwest?
Thanks
M

That is unfortunate that you're having all these problems with the M.

Maybe your dealer can somehow remedy the issue with a discount or a nice offer...?

High end "anything" = high end maintenance, ie. cars, motorcycles, boats, homes, WOMEN!

The new ML63 AMG pics are released today.
But keep in mind, even Porsche and M-Benz are not without problems.

Quote:
The ML63 routes power to all four wheels using a tweaked version of Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive system that has a 40/60-percent front/rear torque spilt and now uses AMG's seven-speed automatic transmission. Standard power is more than adequate at 518 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, but the optional AMG Performance Package increases that to a massive 550 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque thanks to a maximum boost jumping from 14.0 to 18.8 psi.

This is true.
The new AMG looks retarded, I would go with cayenne if I had to trade it in.

You know, I've long been a fan of Porsche and will most likely be such, but the price of their service seems absurd.

A friend of mine owned 2008 911 Turbo, and he said that every service seems like he left a grand at the dealer, so it's a very expensive "warranty".
He just got rid of it because his warranty was running out and he said it needed brakes changed and sparkplugs replaced. Just the sparkplug replacement was going to be 1400$!

I reckon if I pay so much for the car and then they still charge so much for the service, it would be more aggravating than anything, to me personally.
So now, I'm somewhat hesitant about the 911 turbo.

Imagine then how much Porsche costs without a warranty!

I think with BMW at least offering the 4yr/50k or 6yr/100k free maintenance is a great plus and a benefit.

All of these cars are very expensive and equally good in their own way. So it really comes down to preference be it X5M, ML63 AMG, or Cayenne Turbo, but the fact that we won't have to pay for maintenance for the X5M, I believe, is a huge bonus!

So there is a dilemma!

Don't get me wrong. I love this truck. The way it looks, drives, handles just about everything with it. I know other cars have issues. I have owned more than my fair share. Which I guess is why I am bothered. How can my wife's $40k car not have an issue. Nothing. And I am in the BMW dealership so often that I know more personal info about my service rep than I know about some of my neighbors.

OK, the rear camera was annoying. Three time in the shop for days at a time. They had to replace the wiring harness which involved removing half of the interior. Now everything creaks and squeaks. I had them fix the that only to have the automatic rear door stop working. So they have to open it up. Everything is creaking and squeaking again.

The things that make me nervous are things like broken vacuum hoses and turbo coolant lines. These parts should not fail and if they do their should be a design change. I am getting flash backs of my 3rd gen RX-7. Where the cars would collapse vacuum hose on a monthly basis. All the while Mazda said there was no issue.

I don't know. Maybe I am just pissy. Once I get it back and hammer it though a clover leaf I will forget all about it.
