tailgate knock

Hi Guys,

Just got my 2012 M a few weeks ago. Loving the truck so far, except for one issues - I occasionally get a knocking noise from the tailgate area when I hit bumps or go over them in a particular direction

I already adjusted the upper stops and the lower latches to make the gate close very tightly. So much so that the auto-close almost won't close the upper gate.

It's still there.

Any ideas of what I can do to make this go away? It's incredibly annoying on what is otherwise a fantastic vehicle.

I'm experiencing the same noise as well. I've tried everything, I'm down to removing the spare tire in hopes that may be the cause. I would like to hear if others are having the same issue and if so, how they corrected it.

Unfortunate and annoying design flaw, since the E53. Dealer will adjust but the rattle/knock returns. Pickup some thin felt tape from any craft store (Michaels etc...) or even electric tape. Apply once or twice to the two black metal U brackets on the lower left/right that lower tailgate latches onto. Should do the trick.

Happy motoring...

This is weird that I'm reading this. I have a 13' X5M and have the popping noise in the rear as well. Hope the felt tape works!

I also have all sorts of squeaks/knocks from the back. I found the worst one was the back seat latch. If I pull down the backrest, it goes away. I've told the dealer multiple times and it looks like they grease the U latches. It goes away for a little while then comes back. But there might be some other places that the knocks are coming from other than just the tailgate.

knock in the back since 3rd month of ownership, dealer cured it for a little, but it awayz comes back, it does seem like a design fault, strange that BMW hasn't done something about this down the production as I read even 2012 cars have it.
how much tape did you guys apply for it to work?
