Stumped - X3 won't start
The x3 has been sitting in the drive way for weeks. I got the thing with 100k on it and has 104k now a year later. The dealer replaced both camshaft sensors, battery, and vanos solenoid at time of purchase. The whole time the car had a very slow crank when starting. I read about a possible software update that would fix the issue. A whole year went by and never had issues so never worried about it. i did replaced the alternator in that year as a precaution incase the battery wasn't being charged. at my friends the x3 died. had to take the tow of shame home. FFW 4/5 weeks i actually got time to do the starter. Put everything back together and it still won't crank. talked to my dealer and they said they have seen the oil level sensor cause random issues. replaced that...still absolutely nothing. I have the x3 hooked up to the e46 for extra juice but still nothing. I tried reading engine codes but my peake reader is giving me an E10 error which basically means the car isn't on...but it has power and is on. The battery reads 12.8 which should be more than enough to crank the thing over. I am really out of ideas and if anyone can help that would be awesome. 2008 bmw X3 3.0si -Brett |

I have tried the valet key - no success
Borrowed a battery charger. figured i would give it a fresh charge since it has been sitting for 4 isn weeks maybe more. According to the charger its at 9 amps. I still think that when it was hooked up to my e46 it should have started or at least let me read the codes. But, these are desperate times so i will let the battery charge to 12 amps |

Well some more pieces to the puzzle.
I dug out my laptop with bmw scanner 1.4 here are the results I was able to clear the codes except for 1 SRS code which the scanner put as A1 [161] which i can't find anything on the googles about it. Anyone have one seen such a code? Screen shot is all the errors that show up. 15 are shadowed and 1 is active. |

so i was directed in the direction of the ignition switch. Googled symptoms of a dying switch and sounds promising. Will update thread wed after part gets in from BMW.

are you sure the dme has power? or are you two pins for bmw scanner not bridged correctly?

how do i test if the DME has power? the ignition switch was a bust.

I was thinking ignition switch... please update as to how you are getting along.
Anyone know if the trans shift switch being faulty would prevent a start? Have you tried starting the x3 with the shifter in neutral?

Ignition switch didn't help at all. Tried in neutral. Still nothing. Towed it to BMW. Still waiting to here back. In thinking ews but I'm sick of guessing.

survey says...........
the ground cable is exposed and needs to be replaced every 8 ish years.....word to the wise. check your ground cable. |
