X3 3.0i rear differential gone

A good friend of mine has just purchased a used X3 3.0i with 34,000 miles on the clock. When the car is being driven at around 2,000rpm or 40mph in top gear there is quite a loud thrum from the rear compartment. At first we thought it was the exhaust but it turns out its the rear differential and it needs replacing according to his dealer.

Anyone else had this problem?

I take it from the number of responses nobody's had this problem.

Is the exhaust note fairly loud on thses cars?

That's the time I've ever heard anyone having this problem. Maybe someone else has, but I don't ever recall reading a thread about it.

I find the exhaust note is quite 'throaty' with the X3.

Hi Funky
I got a 2001 3.0 i sport and it is extremely throaty when you boot it. The engine does scream quite a bit but there is a throaty roar from the rear. As for driving at about 2000rpm and approx 40 it is very silent so unfortunatly it does sound as if something is wrong. How you getting on with the diesel? My friend got the diesel so i got the petrol so we could compare.lol

Hi Ricky

Only picked it up yesterday so bit early to tell, however, we like the general quality of the car, std gadgets and are very impressed with the low down performance from the 184hp motor. I don't think we will ever get up to BMW's stated mpg figures, only showing 23mpg round town, but still probably 10mpg more than our old ML320.
The ride's a tad choppy but then we knew it would be with the 19" wheels and sports suspension. We like the Steel Grey colour too

hmm I did not know that the X3 had a rear differential. I thought only M cars had 'M' differentials. I thought DSC essentially replaced the rear-differentials...

So does every modern BMW have a rear differential?

Is that a joke or are you serious. I dont mean to be rude but thats a pretty upsurd statement. how would the car move with out a rear diff.

I think the poster is confused by the difference between a LSD (aka M differential) and a regular differential. Am I correct xx3?

OH... FWIW I think you meant "absurd" and not "upsurd" right?
