New Used 2004 X3 Driver Questions

Greetings! My wife and I just picked up a 2004 X3 yesterday. I believe this car basically has everything but the 3.0 engine. Leather, Nav, freaking big sun roof, etc.

So, I have a few questions and one problem. Of course I there are no manuals in the car [crap].

1. I assume the Nav can be updated since I believe its DVD ROM based. How do I find out what version I am on and how do I find the DVD ROM unit? Also, assuming there is a updated ROM would this be covered in the warranty? The car still has about 10,000 miles left.

Edit: found the DVD ROM Nav Player. I seem to have 2003-2, 50001-0070-309. Those are the only numbers [other than the 888 phone number]. Any ideas about the version of this ROM?

2. Does this car have Bluetooth? I am thinking it does not.

3. The car has some kind of telephone installed [and a SOS button] however I assume I need some kind of service to enable it. Any information about this? Perhaps it can be used only as a phone [wife has T-Moble and I have Cingular].

Problem... I believe I did this myself. I put in a MP3 CD into the player hoping it would play. Bad move because now I can not eject it! On the Nav screen it says no CD and the eject button will not ROM. Crap!! So, either putting in my MP3 CD ROM has confused the unit or it was already broken.

There are two things to update - the maps dvd, and the navigation firmware.

The latest firmware is available at this forum and it's v28. You'll have to read the threads to try to understand about a possible issue where the navi would change from USA to Euro during the update. It's a CD image that you put on the navi system, update it and it's done.

The latest navi dvd is 2006-02 (or 2007-01 for USA). It's a DVD image that replaces the current DVD you have.

Is there any grey metal box below the navi, at the trunk? Or a menu "telephone" at the main menu?
If so, try the following:
- turn the key off and let the navi close
- press and keep pressed the speaker button on the middle console
- turn the key to position 1
- stop pressing the button after 3-4 seconds

It's called BMW assist, and it's subscription based (you'll have to pay). It's slightly different in EU and USA, so I'll let someone else explain the advantages over there.

Check the eject-dvd thread at the x3world homepage. Then try a regular music cd. Then try again other mp3 cd and see if it's an issue with that cd, or with the reader.

Thanks for the information! I just updated to v28! Worked like a charm and currently I am getting 2007.1 via µTorrent [still an hour + from finishing].

About the bluetooth - I am not sure where you want me to look for this box. There is nothing under the Nav DVD ROM rack in the back [left side]. However, there is a grey metal box that is at floor level [well some what below floor level]. There is a Telephone option on the Nav Menu and a phone book.

As for a "speaker" button on the console. Well there is the button that dails someone or something. There is also seems to be a speaker button on the sterring wheel too.

The eject-dvd may not apply since this is the CD ROM not the DVD ROM Nav Unit.... thoughts?

As for your Bluetooth question, I don't recall the actual date, but X3s with a production date prior to 10/2004 (I think) do not have Bluetooth. The production date should be on the sticker on the driver's side door. It can be retrofitted, but at a cost. It's cheaper (obviously) to just get a Bluetooth headset.

Looks like my X3 is made in 01/04 - or I assume this is correct. This number was right about the mfg name [top roll].

As for my CD ROM issue, it finally ejected! Thank GOD!

My wife would like to know how did you did in the wreck.... I hope you where not hurt. I guess she wants to know if it was a "Safe" wreck with the X3 [she will be carrying our 3 kids in it most of the time].

2004 Manual

:xoutpost:

Until you can locate a manual, you can download and save the entire 132 page 2004 manual in pdf format from this link
http://www.bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/BM...20-%202004.pdf

I actually prefer manuals in pdf format because you can search for key words a lot more quickly than leafing through pages trying to find something.

Thanks for that information! Yes the pdf will be handy while at home but a proper one would be best while on the road!
