Disappointing, but inevitable. That's okay, I haven't been a fan of recent BMWs anyway.

Not really, but you're going to get a lot of opinions saying build quality is the exact same here since um, the X5 is made in the US. And most of the people on this board own X5s.

There was a recent thread in the E70 forum where someone got flamed. No need for the same to happen here.

This will help them with currency conversion loss.

Austria plant may be used for X1.

Weak dollar = Good time to build in the USA

A good reason for us to try to keep our '06 leased X3 to ourselves and avoid leasing some '10 USA-made version. Or to replace it with a nice Austriac X1
BMW X3 in USA, X1 in Austria

on the other hand, now it will be built by BMW Manufacturing, and not a third party contractor
may or may not be a good thing...

Exactly.

From the Reuters article:

New Chief Executive Norbert Reithofer, who has initiated the first strategic review since 2001, has said the group needs to build up its production volume in Spartanburg to roughly 200,000 units or more in the next two to three years to help hedge against currency fluctuations.

It built just 105,000 vehicles in Spartanburg last year.

Partly as a result, the company suffered adverse forex headwinds of 666 million euros ($902 million) in 2006 and another 677 million in 2005.
