Carputer / CarPC on X3?

Hello,

I wonder if anyone already manage to install a carputer on his X3 and manage to use the original display CID.

I'm looking for information about it, specially how the motorized monitor is controlled.

Thanks
Stefano

I did it the el-cheapo route in my X5. I used video-out and audio-out on a spare laptop and routed that into the TVonNav module inputs (via my DVD player's extra inputs). So now, my passenger can surf the web and all passengers can see the screens, listen to internet streaming audio, listen to MP3's, pull up live weather forecasts, etc. My BT phone handles the internet access. I can control the laptop with an RF mouse if I am alone but I have no desire to to surf while driving!! I'll search around and see if the X3 uses the same components for nav, tv module, etc. Also check with NavTV.com and TVonNav.com and see what they say about the X3. All you need is an overlay device to get the image on the screen, then you can route any video signal through it. (PC, DVD, camcorder, etc.)
Here's a screen shot of our clubhouse on the nav screen:

CarX also has a good interface and the software is free. I like the speedtraps file which works with NAV and alerts when approaching a speedtrap.

Hi,

thanks for your suggestions! I have a couple of possibility for the software front-end, np with this (carx, roadrunner, frodoplayer, etc).

My doubts are about how I controll the motorized monitor! My X3 doesn't have any oem tv-tuner, nav, dvd, monitor. I just bought the original monitor CID and just with power it doesn't open. It need some controll signal from the ibus. I just checked on the HackTheIbus yahoo group but none seems to have tried with an X3 or Z4 (they share the same CID)

Hi Stefano,

I am in the same boat. I bought a CID on ebay without any modules and thought I could use it with my DVD player. Boy, was I wrong! The info I have is two fold, either buy the expensive BMW modules or strip the CID from its' original guts and replace it with an aftermarket LCD. Do you have any different info on the subject?

Cheers,
max

Keep us posted! I was going to buy the oem monitor from ebay also and just hook it up to a dvd player to watch DVDs. I guess it is not that simple.
