OEM Stereo Upgrade!
I've got an 06 3.0d M Sport with Pro Nav and Bluetooth. However the standard setup (sound wse) is poor and I was wondering what options i had for upgrading it without changing the HU. It hasn't got DSP (is this something i can add) or am i looking at new Speakers etc? Thanks in advance guys Si

I suggest new speakers. Someone on another board took apart the X3 system and put in an aftermarket one, and said that the OEM speakers are dirt cheap and pretty low quality (it shows.........I noticed this too without even taking it apart).

They are not completely "bolt on". You must do some modification to the OEM speaker bracket mounts - requires some cutting/glue. The improved speakers are fitted to the existing brackets (then they are bolt on!). I did this mod - WELL WORTH IT! |

Zerochief - did you have any problems removing the door panels to get to the speakers? The drivers door speaker on my x3 does not work. Haven't dug into it yet. Was wondering if there are any "gotya's" I need to be aware of. My roommate said the clips that hold the panels on are fragile so I should plan on replacing them.
Agree with the other posters about the bad sound from the OEM stereo. The mids and highs are so-so and, for my taste, the subs under the front seats are crossed over to high. Way to much mid bass. In addition to changing out the door speakers, I am thinking about a 4 channel amp to run one 12" sub in the back for 80hz or 100hz and below, then use the remaining two channels to power the factory subs for mid bass. With a x-over and a level control I'm hoping I can lessen the mid bass going to the factory subs and better blend them with the door speakers. I haven't figured out yet how exactly to go about it. |
