Anyone gone "offroad" in their X3?

Taking mine into the "woods" for the first time this weekend. Nothing too serious at all, just a few miles of rutted dirt/gravel roads and some low, slick spots that are perpetually wet.

The terrain was more than enough to "defeat" my efforts to depart with my E30 325is, at least until I managed to convince a couple of my buddies to ride out with me seated in the trunk.

One of the reasons that I bought this fun lil buggy was my frequent paintball excusions to all manner of poorly prepared fields and, of course, if Old Man Winter ever decides to come back to visit us in Pa.. I am quite excited to see how well this new ride measures up to the challenges of my "home" field in New Milford, Pa.. I am sure it will be fine.

But I am definitely NOT looking forward to experiencing the vagaries of my "sport" suspension ('05 version) on some fairly washboard sections though.
I am ready to do some shaking and bumping, but there will be no rolling.

Anyone have any experience with their own X3 off road or near off road? Post your tale.

D

I've done a handful of dirt trails and one ATV trail on purpose to test the off-road capabilities. The X3 performed brilliantly (HDC came into play frequently), and I don't understand the perception that it cannot handle anything more than a gravel road. It's capable of any road that I have the guts to take on.

Dirt - No problem; it's fun !

Big problems on fresh mud and sand.

If you put it on the belly.. It's no way to exit whithout a tractor

I've done some fairly rough BLM roads, but nothing too challenging. It's generally dry here in NM, ruts & rocks are the issue. The X3 has decent attack/departure angles, at least in the arroyos I've been in, but slow is the way I go. You can do OK if you go slow, but the lack of skid plaes keeps me going pretty conservative.

Offroad at Joshua Tree

Went offroad in an X3 in Joshua Tree in California. Managed to get it stuck on some loose gravel (X drive didn't kick in for some reason). Still, since the trail was designed for Jeeps, I think if did pretty well.

I go off road when ever i can and the X3 takes it like a champ. I didnt think the X-drive really did anything till i was going a little to fast around a corner, I thought i was going to make friends with the wall, but the I actually felt the X drive turn on and pull me through with out losing control. Its like my tires grew spikes.

Never tried the X3 but the X5 does great on gravel roads....towing a trailer! Sand is a bit of a slippery problem, though...
