Trailer hitches on an X3

Anyone had any experience with these or towing with their X3?

I just ordered the OEM trailer hitch and my indy will be installing it. I will mostly use it for a bike rack, but I will occasionally be towing small trailers and possibly a small Uhaul trailer when we move my M-I-L out to Indiana.

Anyone taken an X3/trailer combo on any non-paved terrain?

Cheers,
D

Haven't put a hitch on our X3 yet. Keep thinking about it, but have managed to put it off.

There is an article on a 2006 with an OEM hitch install, if you have't seen it.

Well, my UK spec 2004 X3 3.0i tows like a dream. The factory hitch has the Trailer Stability Program (unlike a retro fit hitch) and seems to stop snaking etc dead.

I towed for the 1st time in June - a fairly heavy and top-heavy load. Took it on a 600 mile round trip and after the first 20 miles, i basically 'forgot' it was there. Part of that was on unmade tracks...

Only downside with my X3 is that I have the Aero body kit and the hitch is VERY close to the bumper (which is painted), so have to be very careful actually hitching up.

Brakes

The only problem I've found is that if the trailer you are towing has brakes, they will lock up at the slightest touch of the brakes. Also, in trying to install a brake controller to solve the problem, the installation is not straightforward. I cannot figure it out. The X5 brake controller instructions posted on the x5 forum just do not work. Close, but the x5 wiring is just a bit too different. Anyone else had this experience?

x3 tows like a dream. in the uk you can now purchase after market wiring kits which work in the same way as the o/e bmw kit. They will activate the trailer stability control and use the bmw trailer indicator function. I have a westfalia towbar installed (they supply this product to bmw) and it is a superb piece of kit.
