Hollow door sound from an 07...

Just came back from test driving an 07 X3 and noted that the drivers door sounded very tinny and hollow (very Toyota-like) when we closed it and knocked on it. Really like a tin can. All the other doors sounded fine. The Car-Fax checked out w/o any accidents. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

If you are talking about the knocking sound and hollow tapping sound while driving, there is a service fix for it. Not a recall, but they reseal the doors with a teflon tape as well as the sunroof.

I had this done on my 2006 X3.

The car sounded fine on the road. This was noticed when we exited the car and closed the door. It sounded like my old 1987 Toyota 4x4 Pick-up. And when we knocked on it it sounded like a metal gas can (empty mind you).

It might be same issues as the one most experience while driving. The problem I heard while driving was just that because the door was hitting the frame metal to metal.

I would go to you dealer and complain about the tapping sound and have them apply the fix and see if it resolves your issues. They will do all the doors and sunroof.

I think what he is trying to say is that the closing of the door didn't sound 'BMW'-like ... the doors should close with a nice solid sound, like they have lots of insulation in them and are well made. I am assuming the OP believes that as the drivers door sounds 'tinny' on closing he thinks there has been some remedial works done or a replacement door.

To PUZZ, I would suggets if you are thinking about buying it, you get the dealer to remove the door card and check that all is as it should be, and that there hasn't been any damage done. If it's a BMW dealer, then they should do this for you. Is the car CPO/AUC warranted?

For what it's worth, my X3 doors don't sound as well made as my E46 and do sound more tinny, but all the doors are the same - all equally as bad
