Service Engine Soon

Hello,

I have only had my 2004 X3 for a few months. Had my oil changed the other day and then got gas. Then the Service Engine Soon light came on and will not go away.

Vehicle is not running any different, any suggestions?

Likely that the gas cap is not on properly, or that it was put on after the key was turned back on. The fault light in that case is that the evaporative emission control system (which captures gasoline vapours) thinks there is a leak.

With the key off, take the gas cap off and put it back on tightly. Then drive normally; if that was it the light will go off within a day or so.

Yeah that is what I thought it was. I tried it and even filled up again today. I will wait a day or so and see, then I guess get a meter and run a test. Had a run in with the dealer...They screwed me with the warranty...Thanks

You might need to get your gas checked for how much alcohol is in your gas. I had the light come on, took to dealer, they tested gas and it had 16% alcohol. Don't know where my wife got gas but you need to look for signs saying they don't use more then 10% enthanal. Dealer reset the light/computer and now we make sure we only get gas at a select few locations. We are also using 91 oct or higher, dealer said we didn't have to when we were looking to buy but now we know. $130/hr labor to test and reset computer, bad gas is not under warranty.

:xoutpost:

Get a code scanner and forget the guess work. I use a Peak Research R5/FCX-3-16. It's about $150.

I was thinking of getting the same code scanner but was waiting to see if the light came back on, in my case. The dealer also had an issue with me installing a K&N air filter so they replaced it when they test the gas and reset the light. K&N guarantees their filter so I open a claim with them. I ran the X3 for 5 weeks using good gas and factory filter then put the K&N filter back in. It's been over 8 weeks now and the light is still off. K&N said they would pay my bill and refund the filter cost if it made the service engine soon light come back on.
